So good! A quick read that gives an accurate picture of an adolescent with autism.

The book will make you laugh, cry, think - its themes of tolerance and acceptance really moved me. It's about an orphaned 5 year old boy who goes to live with his Cherokee grandparents (in the year 1930). He is taught the "Cherokee Ways," and Little Tree learns how important it is to understand someone before you judge them. From the introduction, it appeared that the book was autobiographical. After finishing the book, I immediately went online to find out more the author. I was so disappointed to learn that it was NOT autobiographical. There is a ton of controversy surrounding the book - Forrest Carter was actually Asa Carter, a reported rascist, bigot, and KKK supporter. I'm still trying to figure out how to reconcile the incredible message of the book with the unclear intent of the author. Why did he write this? Was he trying to redeem his past? Or was it just a money making scheme? I'm not sure we'll ever know.

I'm not really sure what to make of this book. It's basically "The history of Hawaii according to Sarah Vowell." I guess you could make the argument that every history book is basically, "history according to the author," but this one takes it to a different level (i.e. Vowell's New York City snark and pretensions). I guess this could be interesting if you are a big fan of Vowell or her mother, but I have no clue who Vowell is. Vowell is honest about her characteristics -- she doesn't deny being pretentious -- but after a while all her snarky, pretentious comments started to annoy me. I mean, do we care that she once interned at the Smithsonion? Does having a great great great great great great etc. Native American family member make her somehow feel more empathy for what the native Hawaiians went through? Uh... sure. I also got really annoyed when she claimed that the haoles (interesting how she feels free to use that word... is it really her word to use? Doesn't she see that she is a haole? Does she see that she's making money off of the story of Hawaiians?) took the land, but it's okay because they did it legally. Oh boy. Sigh. Snarkiness, politics, and her New York City pretentious attitude aside, the book isn't all that well organized. It's book about the history of Hawaii (and, let's be honest, it's a book about Sarah Vowell), but there are no chapters. I would have appreciated a few breaks in the writing or some kind of organization. At times she rambles on and on about a subject and then goes back to what she was originally talking about, but by that time she'd lost me. Some of the information she wrote about was pretty interesting, so I'll give her two stars for that, but that's it. I'm surprised so many people liked this book, but maybe there are a lot of snarky, pretentious New Yorkers who read it? Ha! (I kid... sorta.)

So sad, yet so wonderful to see God's grace and mercy in the middle of horror.
Loved this book. Read it, fascinating and a wonderful read. Amazing research and a great story that needs to be told.

High School Literature Class introduced me to many of these classics...and I have re-read them once or twice over the years. However, presently I am concentrating on reading and learning new things. However, I am trying to log in the books that I can remember reading. My goal for 2011 was to start and maintain a list and to read 52 books a year. Good reads just might be the place to be able to do this!

Introductory description grammar of Persian. You'd need more to actually learn the language, but this is a good reference for linguists.
