briantoro
Brian Toro briantoro — excellent amnesia novel: Woman in a hotel with no memory of what happened before she got there. Everyday encounters at the station and shop and cafe take on eerie significance, and I was caught up in the intrigue. I liked the fact that it was Britain in the 70s too. Towards the end her past does catch up with her but Figes doesn't tie up all the loose ends (eg what about that suitcase of money?). I liked that. A bit like the film Repulsion at times although more genteel - she tries to get people to visit her!

Adam Zaff adamzaffphotography — I read this when I was about nine, and loved it. Recently, I retunerd to it, and I'm still not sure how I understood it so well- the language idn't exactly complicated for me now, but when I was nine, it probably was! I couldn't get into agian...

Bassem Zein bassemzein5c17 — I totally got sucked into this book. Don't watch the Hitchcock film first, read the book. It might seem a little bit trashy, but it's the best kind of trashy there is to spend your time on.

Shannon Kane _hannon_ane — Hated it. Had the kind of ending I detest...a leave you hanging ending. I kept reading hoping the ending would surprise me and be worth it but I was only disappointed.

liamirwin6d07e
Liam Irwin liamirwin6d07e — I'm not really sure what to make of this book. It's basically "The history of Hawaii according to Sarah Vowell." I guess you could make the argument that every history book is basically, "history according to the author," but this one takes it to a different level (i.e. Vowell's New York City snark and pretensions). I guess this could be interesting if you are a big fan of Vowell or her mother, but I have no clue who Vowell is. Vowell is honest about her characteristics -- she doesn't deny being pretentious -- but after a while all her snarky, pretentious comments started to annoy me. I mean, do we care that she once interned at the Smithsonion? Does having a great great great great great great etc. Native American family member make her somehow feel more empathy for what the native Hawaiians went through? Uh... sure. I also got really annoyed when she claimed that the haoles (interesting how she feels free to use that word... is it really her word to use? Doesn't she see that she is a haole? Does she see that she's making money off of the story of Hawaiians?) took the land, but it's okay because they did it legally. Oh boy. Sigh. Snarkiness, politics, and her New York City pretentious attitude aside, the book isn't all that well organized. It's book about the history of Hawaii (and, let's be honest, it's a book about Sarah Vowell), but there are no chapters. I would have appreciated a few breaks in the writing or some kind of organization. At times she rambles on and on about a subject and then goes back to what she was originally talking about, but by that time she'd lost me. Some of the information she wrote about was pretty interesting, so I'll give her two stars for that, but that's it. I'm surprised so many people liked this book, but maybe there are a lot of snarky, pretentious New Yorkers who read it? Ha! (I kid... sorta.)

Priscilla Lim _ — I felt rather under-whelmed by this book, I'm afraid. One of the things I liked about the previous two was the immediacy and the emotion of the main character and the connection the reader has with her. The fact that she didn't know what was going to happen, didn't agree, but made the best choices within her power. In this book, a lot of the action is off-screen, out of the character's influence and what action she gets involved in feels staged. Yes, a lot of it is staged by necessity, but by choosing this format, I feel the author loses the immediacy that comes with a story told in first person. This volume is much more epic in nature, more distant from the characters. I feel there is simply too much 'stuff' in this book, a few too many betrayals for them to make a true impact in me. I feel itt would have been better had the story been kept simple and more involved on a personal scale. The fact that I wasn't so involved with the character made me more focused on the fact that I wasn't (have never as a matter of fact) buying the setting. The government, the president, the Capitol are simply too evil and too one-dimensional for me to find them believable as antagonists.

Terry Dyvig _yvig — Ok. So I read it. What a S_L_O_W read, and a little confusing. All the hype I've heard about this book over the years did not match the reading experience for me, at least. I get the general point of the book, that without law any society can quickly move toward savagry. But the way Golding wrote was just so abstract and heavily detailed, yet without giving INFORMATIVE detail, I just felt a little clueless on just about every page. (I still don't know how the boys even got there!) Really pretty disappointing, but I can finally say I read it. Just answer me this - WHY is this book very often standard literature for middle/high school aged students?!?!?! Good grief... Now, onto a book I can look forward to reading.

_illem_eenik
Willem Deenik _illem_eenik — This book is the perfect beach read! Pack up your bags and head to the beach with the perfect vacation book! Nothing better than reading about a group of friends at the beach while you're on the beach. "Summer Rental" is about 3 best friends who live together for a month in a distressed, old beach house that has been a family heirloom of a neighborhood local. Ellis, Julia, and Dorie quickly discover the power and strength their friendship has. They experience feelings like lust, love, loss, and trust. Ellis meets a new guy and falls in love, and has feelings that she never thought could be possible. Julia comes to crossroads of whether or not to explore her modeling career further; that seems to be going nowhere, or to build a life with the man she loves and explore the idea of marriage-something that has haunted her her entire life. Dorie quickly discovers while their is loss in one portion of her life, their is surprises in another when she comes to terms with being single and pregnant. All three childhood friends learn new things about each other, make new friends, and come to the realization that even if the wallet is tight, sometimes going away with your girlfriends is the only answer.
