I liked this book for many reasons: It allowed me a certain insight into a world so far removed from my experience; It helped me to see familiar work in a new light; It is moving to the point of heartbreak sometimes. However, I completely disagreed with many of the author's analysis of the Western works. I have read and re-read and thought and argued about Lolita, and I just feel like this book drags it through the mud.

this was pretty intense - i liked it overall, enjoyed the drawings of the unconcious. it only gets three stars because i actually think it was a little long - not much happened other than a little boy trying to live with and understand his brother's epilepsy.

A story about a poor Irish family and their life in Brooklyn. McCourt does a great job in bringing the reader inside his life through the small and specific details about his clothes, shoes, his alcoholic father... It's kind of a sad book, but very well-written. It makes it even more powerful that this is his memoir.

I loved it, and I hated it. The writing style that I found brilliant in the beginning became jumbled and manic to me by the middle of the book. It was a roller coaster, not because it kept me at the edge of my seat, but because it had waves of excitement and then went down hill to where I almost wanted to get off (boring or depressing parts) and then it slowly brought me back up and grabbed my interest enough until the next dip. (I had actually put it down at one point.) Parents might want to read it before handing it over to their preteens and teens. I’m not sorry I read it. It was unique, well thought out, and had very alive characters. One thing I find interesting is that I wanted to watch the movie right up until I read the “Fragments” chapter. And I just hate that this book that I loved at the beginning left me feeling icky by the end.
