Haley Barber hfiglesd550 — Jesus. I cannot wait for this book. Come onnnn February 12th!!! I need you nowww! :) 2.17.13 Such a good ending! Well, most of it. Should prove to be quite interesting in the next novel. I just love Adrian and Sydney. So much so! It wasn't quite what I was expecting.. but I was pleasantly surprised. Sydney has come a long way from the 'creature of the night' wary Alchemist she was back in the Vampire Academy series, and thankfully so. She's growing into her own ideals, and she doesn't stand back and watch things unfold. She jumps into the middle of it all, and I enjoy it so! And naturally Adrian is amazing. I've loved him since the first time I read about him. Talk about someone coming a long way! I love who he is for Sydney and who she is for him. They just make me smile :) Anyway, I can't wait for 'The Fiery Heart' -- swoons a little at the title now. Until then, can I become an honorary member of AYE too? ;)

Shaun Hughes _haun_ughes — What is it that makes an author's work so distinctive? Is it their sentence structure, or choice of adjectives? Whatever it is I find Barbara Hambly's writing very appealing whether she is writing fantasy or historical fiction, and I love her atypical heroes and heroines. The Ben January books, of which this is the fifth, are historical detective stories set in New Orleans after the Louisiana purchase, but before the civil war. Ben is black, a freeman of colour, and this gives him a particular perspective and allows the author to make subtle points about racial attitudes then and now. He is also a talented musician and doctor, and this gives him the opportunity to become embroiled in any number of shady goings on in the city - perhaps a slightly implausible number by this book, and I thought that he might have become a little more wary about becoming involved due to the constant risk he runs of being either beaten up, sold into slavery, or both. Nevertheless the books, including this one, are excellently plotted and convincing stories, as I said above, I adore Hambly's prose and what she has to say about the period. I'm also looking forward to seeing what happens to Ben, Rose and Minou in future books - I hope they all see sense and emigrate to Paris and live happily ever after but knowing how Hambly likes to put her characters through the mill, I can't see that happening.

Patricia Novia imagineartf846 — ** spoiler alert ** I enjoyed the seafaring parts of the novel and the idea of a future where London is flooded, but the technology mentioned in the book didn't add anything to the characters and plot that any other treasure could have. The idea that the world was devastated because of technology was interesting, but I don't think that having a computer as the treasure was vital to that point. Even though this book is part of a series, I didn't feel like this part of the story wrapped up well at all, it just stopped. I don't really like books that rely that much on being a series, each book should stand on its own just as well as being part of a series. I did love the seacat idea, and even though they made a big deal about it I didn't feel it was necessary to give Cat a bigger reason than being Lilly's companion. It's mentioned that Cat is a seacat because he's grey, but there was never any explanation of this belief or why this is the case. I think in the end it just didn't feel complete to me. If it had a more solid story and ideas I would probably like it more. I'm not sure if I'm interested enough to read the next book though.

Tanya Mittal tanyab — Auguste Renoir's experience of painting this famous work: slow to start but definitely gets interesting- very neat to get in his head and go through the steps of completing his painting. I also enjoy the life of Paris in 1880. The characters are the actual models in the painting, who were Renoir's real-life friends. Vreeland does a wonderful job of bringing them all to life.........terrific once you get past the first few chapters!

Keiner K keno10cr — This and The Yellow Wallpaper are in my opinion some masterful pieces of alarming fiction.

Doug A quickstep25 — The strongest moments in the book were the small ones about the small characters. It was an interestinglty quirky read - about the Apocalypse.

Terry Dyvig _yvig — I did enjoy the book but pair it with the bonus novella and it makes for a long read. I wish the recipes were in the back of the book so I could have skipped over those. I felt at times the plot did drag on a little too long and there were points where the book was lagging plot wise but overall it was a good book. I read cozies often and while I am not in love with the series I am planning on reading the next book, hopefully things will pick up.

Terri Armstrong terri68c5 — Compelling read! Well-researched, realistic historical fiction takes you into the world of Judas and Mary Magdalene. Reminiscent of The Da Vinci Code, only it introduces the other side of the family.

Willem Deenik _illem_eenik — Probably my favorite fiction read in the twentieth century.

cbutter
Craig Butterworth cbutter — I loved it, and I hated it. The writing style that I found brilliant in the beginning became jumbled and manic to me by the middle of the book. It was a roller coaster, not because it kept me at the edge of my seat, but because it had waves of excitement and then went down hill to where I almost wanted to get off (boring or depressing parts) and then it slowly brought me back up and grabbed my interest enough until the next dip. (I had actually put it down at one point.) Parents might want to read it before handing it over to their preteens and teens. I’m not sorry I read it. It was unique, well thought out, and had very alive characters. One thing I find interesting is that I wanted to watch the movie right up until I read the “Fragments” chapter. And I just hate that this book that I loved at the beginning left me feeling icky by the end.
