This book was recommended to me by several people - and although I have enjoyed reading books written from an animal's perspective before - I am always hesitant to read one. It just seems that it would too easy to be become contrived and corny. If I had heard the the book was also about car racing and had a spiritual bent I definitely would not have picked it up. All that being said this was a really sweet optimistic book. Perhaps a bit sentimental but it fit my mood when I was reading it.

What is it that makes an author's work so distinctive? Is it their sentence structure, or choice of adjectives? Whatever it is I find Barbara Hambly's writing very appealing whether she is writing fantasy or historical fiction, and I love her atypical heroes and heroines. The Ben January books, of which this is the fifth, are historical detective stories set in New Orleans after the Louisiana purchase, but before the civil war. Ben is black, a freeman of colour, and this gives him a particular perspective and allows the author to make subtle points about racial attitudes then and now. He is also a talented musician and doctor, and this gives him the opportunity to become embroiled in any number of shady goings on in the city - perhaps a slightly implausible number by this book, and I thought that he might have become a little more wary about becoming involved due to the constant risk he runs of being either beaten up, sold into slavery, or both. Nevertheless the books, including this one, are excellently plotted and convincing stories, as I said above, I adore Hambly's prose and what she has to say about the period. I'm also looking forward to seeing what happens to Ben, Rose and Minou in future books - I hope they all see sense and emigrate to Paris and live happily ever after but knowing how Hambly likes to put her characters through the mill, I can't see that happening.

This is the second Klassen novel I have read. I enjoyed The Silent Governess a lot. However this one was truly impressive. The dialogue was engaging (usually my main issue with the small quantity of Christian novels I have read) and the situation believable. There were some elements which struck me as a bit contrived, but as a fan of Jane Eyre, I don't think it is on the level of Jane stumbling into her long lost cousins' house in the midst of a storm. The faith element of the plot seemed a bit weak, but I found it an allowable reflection of the time and setting of the novel. Overall, it was an enjoyable, light read that kept my attention and interest.

I'll preface this by saying this is not a review. It is instead a plea for you to read this book. I've been trying for years to get you people to check it out, and you've consistently ignored me. I'm truly insulted. My only takers have been my grandmother (loved it) and a crazy ex who thanked me for recommending it, going so far as to as to say it was "the most incredible thing to have ever crossed the threshold of [his] brain". If that's not a glowing endorsement, I don't know what is. Well, your loss I guess.
