This was good and a little hard to get into. At first it skips around so much I was lost. In the middle it ties it all together but it was hard to keep reading.

There is nothing I can say in this review that would give Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns" justice. I read this book in less than a week, could not put it down. The way Hosseini writes captures you from the first page to the end, always leaving you guessing, thinking, and wondering what will happen next. The way he describes Afghanistan to readers who are largely unfamiliar with the territory is genius. And while Hosseini's books (both this and Kite Runner) are not exactly the best books to read for "feel good moments," his portrayal of the human struggle, and individuals' persistence through that struggle leads me to believe that there is no better writer out there who understands the complexity of human beings then Khaled Hosseini. This book is a must read.

The author put together an excellent argument about how if the pro life movement really wanted to stop abortions, they would advocate for comprehensive sex ed and access to birth control. Instead they spend their efforts as a movement working on ways to control women's sexuality.
Short, fast, 'updated' fairlytales of a sort. Liked some, others not so much. A bit too open-ended most of the time.

For such a slim book to be packed with such an emotional punch, is due in large part to Roth's mastery of the English language. He has always been able to craft a beautiful sentence. Even when the subject matter is dark and heavy - as is the case with Everyman - there is a certain unassuming beauty to the way that Roth tells a story. To be clear, this is not a feel-good book. It deals with man's (the everyman of the title) struggle with his own mortality. While never a light topic, it is a worthy read and it handles the subject matter with a subtleness that leaves the reader thinking long after the pages run out.

I didn't realize this book was a sequel until I finished it but it works well as a stand-alone book. It's about a brother and sister in the aftermath of Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence and the wounds from the war lead the siblings in different direction - one towards religion and the other not. While in lots of ways I identified with Maya, she was also a really frustrating and stubborn character. While I liked the book, I didn't love it and I wasn't blown away by it.

This has been a valuable read for me, though I'm not sure Tatum ever even acknowledges the question that nagged at me all the way through: does the fact that positive images of non-"majority"* (white/male/wealthy/straight/physically able) culture are less common, mean that "minority"* individuals are duty-bound to become tokens of minority culture & history? Is it possible, to make the question personal, for a gay man to be an advocate for gay rights, to combat heterosexism and homophobia, while nevertheless "assimilating" to traditional "straight" manners of dress, patterns of speech, career, leisure activities, political affiliation, etc? Granted, race and sexual identity, while similar, cannot be directly compared, and much of the skepticism and doubt I feel reading Tatum's words may stem from the fact that I have the privilege of choosing whether or not to be "out" as a gay man—and that nearly all of my immediately apparent identity conforms to the "majority" image. And of course I fully share her frustration with the paucity of minority*-focused historical and cultural education in America, and fully support measures to improve students' awareness of the people of color, women, non-wealthy, and queer individuals (and their outspoken majority* allies) whose courageous impact on society traditionally goes unnoticed (or at least unspoken). But my deeply held belief is that every kid in the cafeteria should grow up not into a representative of this or that category, but into a self-confident individual of integrity—that a Black woman shouldn't be made to feel that straightening her hair is an act of rebellion, any more than a gay man should feel guilty for eschewing techno music, piercings, and leather underwear. That vision is, I think, present in the spirit of Tatum's book, but I'm not convinced she—or any of us—has yet found the best way to work toward the dream. *"Majority" and "minority" in terms of the power they hold in society, regardless of actual demographic "counts."
