Roberto Voorbij robertovoorbij — There is nothing I can say in this review that would give Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns" justice. I read this book in less than a week, could not put it down. The way Hosseini writes captures you from the first page to the end, always leaving you guessing, thinking, and wondering what will happen next. The way he describes Afghanistan to readers who are largely unfamiliar with the territory is genius. And while Hosseini's books (both this and Kite Runner) are not exactly the best books to read for "feel good moments," his portrayal of the human struggle, and individuals' persistence through that struggle leads me to believe that there is no better writer out there who understands the complexity of human beings then Khaled Hosseini. This book is a must read.

Lukasz Majcher majterrof826 — So maybe this book isn't realistic to most real life "coming out in high school" situations. That wasn't the point, was it? This was an important book when it came out because it featured two gay characters - females too, the forgotten gay kids - who weren't crazy, who had dreams and goals, and who acted like real people. And they were happy. And they didn't kill themselves in the end or die terribly or end up with men. It was a real accomplishment at the time. That being said, why is it still relevant in a time where the world is full of media representation of non-psychotic, surviving gay characters? Because this is a little escape. The love story is different from what we see every day because it is treated very much like a timid and sweet love story that could work with teenagers of any gender. It is tender and not as sexualized as a lot of fiction - especially fiction for gay teens, who are apparently more sex obsessed than straight teenagers. It is very important to the anxious and the hopelessly romantic. It gives them some hope. I think that was the point of this book. Even if it may seem outdated, I think Annie on my Mind is one of the most important books for lesbian and bisexual teenagers. I know it was important to me when I was sneaking it home from the library my freshman year of high school and I would recommend it to anyone.
