Roberto Voorbij robertovoorbij — For such a slim book to be packed with such an emotional punch, is due in large part to Roth's mastery of the English language. He has always been able to craft a beautiful sentence. Even when the subject matter is dark and heavy - as is the case with Everyman - there is a certain unassuming beauty to the way that Roth tells a story. To be clear, this is not a feel-good book. It deals with man's (the everyman of the title) struggle with his own mortality. While never a light topic, it is a worthy read and it handles the subject matter with a subtleness that leaves the reader thinking long after the pages run out.

Sasha N sasha_design — While driving down a single lane highway, escaping her own failed marriage, Isabelle suddenly comes upon a car stopped in her lane with a woman getting out. Driving through heavy fog it is impossible for her to stop. The accident kills the other woman. It was not her fault but nonetheless Isabelle is devastated. Not as devastated as she becomes when through the woman’s son she is drawn into the woman’s life and finds herself falling in love with her widowed husband. It sounds like a typical “chick-lit” love story, but this book has a bit of a difference. It explores what happens when an accident leads to the uncovering of all kinds of secrets.

Hasan Sakız hakanyslk — I must read this book! Like now! I wrote the above sentence when I first heard of this book, and added it to my "to be read" shelf. Maybe because I was so excited about this book, I was equally so let down. It is not at all what I expected. Of course if you are interested in the history of Kansas, you might love it. I was expecting more of a Glass Castle type of story, but this was not that at all. I thought I would find a kindred spirit with all the moving the author did, but I just couldn't connect with her beyond that. Maybe it is because I would never go looking for home where I came from. Also I was a bit confused as the author was technically born in Colorado, why she honed in on Kansas. There were quite frankly a lot of twists and turns that didn't work for me in this book.
