I enjoyed this book. I wish there was a little more back story and follow thru, but I think that theres great potential in the author and in the story. I'll be reading the other books.

I swear to God I tried to read it...I just couldn't get past the first few pages. It was that bad. I loved Sex and the City though!

All the fixin's for a good book club book, yet despite the sporadic moments of interests, this one just didn't do it for me. (I am, however, one weird sister, so...great title!).

Interesting idea about a future world where books are forbidden and burned by firemen; people are numbed nearly senseless by their constant reality-TV viewing; attempted suicide by overdose is so commonplace that mere technicians show up to resuscitate the victims; and an underground group keeps books alive by memorizing the works of a single author.

Didn't take time to write about this one at the time -- so will borrow a fly leaf type description..... In the picturesque village of Branscombe, New Hampshire, the townsfolk are all pitching in to prepare for the first (and many hope annual) Festival of Joy. The night before the festival begins, a group of employees at the local market learn that they have won $160 million in the lottery. One of their co-workers, Duncan, decided at the last minute, on the advice of a pair of crooks masquerading as financial advisers, not to play. Then he goes missing. A second winning lottery ticket was purchased in the next town, but the winner hasn't come forward. Could Duncan have secretly bought it? The Clarks' endearing heroes -- Alvirah Meehan, the amateur sleuth, and private investigator Regan Reilly -- have arrived in Branscombe for the festival. They are just the people to find out what is amiss. As they dig beneath the surface, they find that life in Branscombe is not as tranquil as it appears. So much for an old-fashioned weekend in the country. Alvirah and Regan at it again -- enjoyable!

Wow, this book in and of itself is a great book. I feel like the other 5 were kind of pointless now, because so much happened in this book. Of course, the other 5 are necessary to complete the story but they were nowhere near as good as this one. It reminded me a lot of Hunger Games in the sense that not everything is happy and perfect in the end. A lot of people are hurt, but everything is resolved. It was crazy for sure, and now I understand why so many people love Rose and Dimitri so much. Really good book, I highly recommend the series to anyone, just with the disclaimer that the last book is really the money shot :)

Honestly, I would probably only give this book a 2.5 star rating. As some have commented already, this book is very hard to get into. I found this book difficult to follow with all the names mentioned through the chapters. I don't have much knowledge with the history of the American Mafia, thus the reason for the read. The book is extremely compact in information in which I found myself many times wanting to put it down because of the overabunance of details. However, this book does provide an excellent overview of the American Mafia through the 60 - 70 years it covers. I especially like the chapters on Luciano, Capone, and Costello. These were the major figures in the American Mafia which I would like to look further into. Lastly, I think there are some good leadership lessons here. Capone was rash and over ambitious, thus leading to a spotlight on the mafia and his early removal after only three years. However, Capo's like Luciano and Costello who ruled more patiently and less aggressively had reigns which were longer and more successful.
