If you're interested in learning where your food comes from ... the author investigates the big-business conventional food industry, the "industrial organic" (organic food grown and distributed through the conventional/industrial system), "pastoral" (small-farm/locally distributed), and foraging/hunting, by tracing all of the components of four separate meals that he consumes. Although I didn't agree with all of his conclusions (re: vegetarianism and industrial organic), I appreciated the structure of the book, and the detailed insight into where our food comes from.

It took me a while to get the connection between the parallel narratives (Pontius Pilate and 20th century Russia). This book requires some thoughtful concentration, but it ends an engrossing read.

I read this book in paperback a while ago. I was entertained by it, but so much of what is good about the book is the suspense. Because it was written by Card, there is excellent character development. The story moves along nicely. It's full of suspense. However, once the suspense is over, you start to realize there was very to the book except for mystery and suspense. Because of that, I thought I'd never re-read the book. Then it came out in unabridged audio, and I changed my mind. I decided to listen to it, and despite knowing how it ended, I did enjoy it. There were things I found that I'd missed the first time. It's still not one of my all time favoirtes, but it is a pretty good book.

Pretty heavy bias toward PR. I don't necessarily disagree with the philosophy of the book, I just wish it were a bit more balanced. Advertising takes the bad wrap all around in this one.
