It's the second one in an epic series, and it took so long to finish this one, I thought I'd take a break after this one to do some other reading for a little while. Bad decision. I want the next one. NOW. Am wishing there wasn't a hold list on it at the library. Maybe it's not so expensive to buy? Hmm...

Although I wouldn't classify this as one of my favorite novels, and it took me forever to get through it, how can anyone give this book less than five stars? I just have to appreciate Tolkien's attention to detail, his imagination and creativity, and his creation of unique and diverse characters. The battle between good and evil is an amazing backdrop to all the other themes he carries through. Knowing that he created his own languages for certain races in Middle Earth is mindblowing to say the least. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the book to just anyone, or ever read it again but I'm glad I did finally read it. It rivals almost any other classic book out there in imagination and creativity and I have the utmost respect for Tolkien's writing. Lastly, out of the three volumes I would argue that the last is the best. The characters are fleshed out even more (although I missed reading about Gimli and Legolas, my favorites) and more characters are introduced with just as much detail. The hobbits demonstrate their growth and the battles between good and evil are finally carried out to fruition.

** spoiler alert ** I finished this book last night and I still haven't recovered. The first few chapters were okay, I liked them, but it felt like something was missing. I was missing the thing that made me love these books, although I didn't know what it was. Until Simon stepped in that demoncircle thing to get that cat. That's the point where everything changed for me. I actually said out loud: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? And my cousin, who was reading another book next to me looked at me like I'd gone insane. And the very moment that made my the happiest was when Jace said: "it's me. It's me." Then I found what I had been missing. My Jace *insert very sentimental sobbing face* I know a lot of you will probably be like: why the hell do you like a guy who is as cocky as Jace? And I honestly don't know, but he amuses me :) I had missed the real Jace although, while reading the previous chapters I was annoyed when Clary thought he wasn't her Jace. Probably because she was cockblocking herself by doing so, but I forgive her. In the end, she was right. The thing I liked the least about this book was, obviously, the Malec break-up. HOW COULD YOU CASSANDRA, HOW COULD YOU! If they don't get together in the end, you need to pay for therapy. Also, don't kill them. Or Jace or Clary or Isabelle or Luke. Because I kind of have a feeling that whoever is going to die, is a part of a couple and we all will cry. Because that's what Cassandra does. M I don't however think she'll kill Jace. Twice is enough, lady. Three times isn't a charm. I can't wait for City of Heavenly Fire. It's going to be amazing.

Entertaining if a bit formulaic: child with heretofore untapped abilities plucked from poverty/bondage by mystical authority figure, training montage, two friends shunned by others but also remarkably talented, mid book mission, then use newly honed skills to defeat villains and save friends. It practically writes itself, but there are interesting details that make me want to read the next one. So, mission accomplished, Ms. Lackey.

I loved aspects of the book - it's a story of a wealthy turn-of-the-century woman who is completely crushed by the weight of societal expectations and her own loss of identity. I wanted this book to be "The Bell Jar". In parts it delivered for me, but it floundered and disappointed in others. Still, an interesting book.
