kwedo

evanys
Evanys Gutierrez evanys — Absolutely brilliant. I'll read the other volumes as soon as they hit eBook. Like all good history and biography this book reads like literature.

murielgonzales
Muriel Gonzales murielgonzales — Smith's JUST KIDS is written with honesty and feeling, and I enjoyed getting a glimpse of 1970s New York through her eyes. It's hard not to admire her devotion to art, and to her friend Robert. The purity of their relationship, and the ways in which they inspired and nurtured each other's artistic growth is very affecting. The book is a beautiful portrait of this extraordinary relationship. Interestingly, although Smith comes across as likable and candid, I didn't ever feel I truly knew her. The straightforward prose can occasionally feel stark, and Patti's bold, daring choices come as a surprise, seemingly at odds with her understated voice. Not too familiar with Smith's or Mapplethorpe's work before reading this, I did feel that a lot was left off the page, although this might not be an issue to her fans or to older readers. Something holds me back from outright loving this book, but I highly recommend it.

kov1
Alex Kov kov1 — Maybe the most depressing play of the 20th century, but maybe that alone is reason enough to read it.

_ljoni
Yahya Aljoni _ljoni — it is a great quick read and a reminder why reading just for fun is wonderful. A unique topic too, and I don't even usually like science fictiony stuff. How ironic that a book based on the concept of time travel serves to draw you into the present!

quitobonino
Esteban Bonino quitobonino — Well, crap. Kenyon's done another one - the kind of book you feel guilty for reading because you KNOW it's cliche and not even very well written, from a technical standpoint. I mean, every chapter is like a re-write of the last one, at least as far as internal dialog. You know, "Why do I want her so much?/I can't have her/Oh my poor tortured soul etc, etc" But DAMMIT IF IT DOESN'T GRAB ME. So, apparently she's doing something right. Maybe it's her mastery of angst ridden immortals. Maybe it's the explicit(awesome)sex scenes. I have no idea. This is outside my norm. But... *sigh* I know I'll be reading another one soon...

gslow88
G-slow G-slow gslow88 — Although not Keruoac's best book, it holds a special place in my heart for it's handling of themes regarding spirituality, adventurism, and crazy friendship. Wrapped around he and Gary Synder's friendship, the book introduced me at an early age to buddhist concepts without being heavy handed, as well as a heavy appreciation for good drunken street sprawls. This book single-handedly made me want to wander the universe.

sofiavilacoro
Sofia Vila-coro sofiavilacoro — And y'all think I'm a fish nerd...

_hmed_ashad
Ahmed Rashad _hmed_ashad — One of the best books I've ever read. Mary Karr is so amazing at the words she chooses to express her emotions. Everyone can take something from this book.

manojkumaraf29
Manoj Kumar manojkumaraf29 — enjoying reading this alongside Eagle's Cry, the story of the Louisiana Purchase. I learned from reading a biography of LaSalle that he had gone to extraordinary lengths to establish good relations and profound trust between himself and the native Americans of the Mississippi Valley. Fascinating that generations later the French settlers continued in his legacy, living and trading peaceably with the local nations. It is regrettable that those who structured the US settling of the West lived out of such a different mandate. The thought comes, 'How different our country would be today, if we had had more respect for those whose rich traditions were well established before we turned their lives upside down...'

theresaayotte
Theresa Ayotte theresaayotte — Jan Brett's illustrations are exquisite and unusual because she also has illustrations around the border of each page. The story is in the typical fairy tale mode, a cute story.

Chanaz Damardji chanazdamadf81 — Greaatt! Fill in your life with optimism. Those stories could cheer u up when u're down, stay calm when u're hanging on the sky and breakdown your ego, keep on urself being wise in making choice of life!

ramkeshav25
Ram Keshav ramkeshav25 — I love this book for the author's precision, and her infinite understanding of how we choose our decisions, and why.

_sagus
Isagus Extroversions _sagus — My favorite of the three Aira books I've read. Creepy and memorable. Aira's ingenious use of the naked man ghosts is a stroke of genius.

_outt_8
Chuck Harrison _outt_8 — Wonderful continuation of the first book. These two books are one continuous story and should not be read separately (or out of order). A continuous narrative for about 1,300 pages, it is entertaining for the entire length. Near the end of what is now the 3rd reading of these books, I did start to nit pick and wonder why certain problems weren't more easily solved with the mirrors. Clearly the characters figured out how to fix some problems with them, but other problems could have easily been solved with the mirrors but then we wouldn't have the crisis in the book. I read an article recently that said it was harder for mystery writers in the age of cell phones as the crimes have to happen outside of cell coverage areas or when the battery on the phone dies - otherwise, it is too easy for some message to get out and then no mystery. Anyway - this book resolves all of the problems set up in the first book. Without too much mystery to it - the work ends with Mordant's Need being met and all the bad guys killed or otherwise rendered powerless and nearly all of the good guys surviving and in a better place. Much like the Covenant books, there is just enough adult action to make these harder to read for tween-agers - but teens could handle it just fine, I suspect.

_iefen
Yuyu Yi _iefen — One of those chance matches to recently read Der Fuehrer. Both books were chosen at random but the scaffolding effect makes Ship of Fools so much more powerful a read.
