If you're a white North American, Freedom will do the trick and represent you all over its pages. If you're not white and North American read Freedom instead of Christian Lander's Stuff White People Like, for a better understanding of American vanity in the 21st century. I liked Freedom, I really did. I mean, what's not to enjoy when you can see the bits and pieces of yourself that you love and hate weaved in and out of 5 different characters? There's something for you to oooh, ahhh, and simultaneously cringe at in Patty, Walter & Richard, the triumvirate of false consciousness in Franzen's land of the free. All 3 have the unpleasant business of realizing that they are shitty people, albeit to varying degrees, but shitty people none the less. There's something both damning and redemptive to see all your fears about being an asshole confirmed in bold type font. I enjoyed Patty and her relentless goal to remain in a state of self-loathing and degradation while doing NOTHING to remedy it. I enjoyed her acceptance of her shitty self until Franzen made her go back to Walter like a bitch. There are definitely no perfect characters here, but Patty came close. All the women in Franzen's world, however, seem to be either depressed and therefore portrayed as the hysterical woman, or obediently by their man's side. The characters are so well formed that these stereotypes are actually more complex on the page, but I still have a problem with the fact that Patty couldn't make it on her own. None of the women can make it on their own actually. I guess, to Franzen's credit, the men too are lost without the women in thier lives, but they still have the ability to get on with the day and work, eat, have sex, sleep, etc. They're just more lonely and a little messed up while doing it. The women, on the other hand, are left intellectually and emotionally crippled. I'm not saying that a lot of this doesn't ring true, but the difference is most women - at some point - get on with their lives and stop waiting for some guy to come save the day. I don't know. I have problems with this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a white, 30 year old North American woman though, so....

While I enjoyed this installment in the Bradford series, I was not as impressed as I was in the first two books. This one seemed to come to a very quick end which disappointed me. Maybe the others did too and I just didn't notice because I rolled right into the next book. I was excited about Sara's story but to me hers was a bit of a let down. I did love Mac at the beginning of the book, I just wanted to throttle him by the middle. This book has really left me wanting more. Hopefully Dooley and Kevin will have stories of their own!

Decent story, a bit sophomoric. The main character does not have much depth. In fact, this is one of the better in the series. It is a light read, devoid of sex and violence. I can usually predict the murder about halfway through the book.

Although not Keruoac's best book, it holds a special place in my heart for it's handling of themes regarding spirituality, adventurism, and crazy friendship. Wrapped around he and Gary Synder's friendship, the book introduced me at an early age to buddhist concepts without being heavy handed, as well as a heavy appreciation for good drunken street sprawls. This book single-handedly made me want to wander the universe.
