A long-format story, about an ex-con dealing with his past and the hopelessness and shame of his present. The superhero parts are great, but down deep it's a character piece.

Enter the world of the prestigious Ailey School in New York City and view it through the eyes of Iman Bright, a thirteen-year-old student. As she goes through her lessons in ballet, jazz, modern and West African dance, readers will understand the dedication it takes to study dance at this level. At the same time, readers will see a normal thirteen year old who goes to school and plays the violin. The book strikes exactly the right balance. Ivey’s photographs nicely capture the movement and poses of dance. He is equally successful capturing Iman when she is out of school with her friends and family. Gladstone’s text comes from Iman’s point of view and is simple and frank about what she is doing. A strong nonfiction dance title, this book takes it beyond popular dance with sparkly costumes and to a more studious and serious level. Appropriate for ages 5-8.

Strange. I'm not sure I understood it, yet mildly fascinating.

this book was a refreshing look at how we deal with the not-so-good things in life, and what tools we have within ourselves to help navigate those times. one of the most important things i came to understand is that things like sadness, anger, frustration, feelings of instability, etc. are not inherently bad things. rather, they are challenging. they can present themselves as obstacles. but in reality, they are incredible teachers within our own personal experience that help us to grow. sometimes in the darkest of times, we achieve the greatest clarity. i let myself wrap my mind around this perspective that was so different from traditional western mores of achieving happiness and avoiding pain. in this way, i started to feel a new sense of peace and serenity about the difficult things faced in life. what i loved about this book was that she didn't write it to help readers solve their problems but rather to look at their "problems" as incredibly valuable, illuminating devices to open their minds and hearts to grow and deepen. a great book, i recommend it to anyone who is willing to open up to a change in thinking.

This book is a skimmer, and I never skim. But there are really interesting parts, and not so interesting parts.
So, here's my funny story. Tracy wrote (god, you are all I have to talk about!) about this being an incest book and I was like, "incest? what incest?!" So, she reminded me of when the brother and sister hole up and make like rabbits and I was like, "Oh yeah! THAT incest!" I would like to say that I am not, personally, into incest. But boy was I glad when they finally were. It's like wanting, wanting, pleading with the prince to just kiss Snow White! He finally did.

I usually don't enjoy compilations of books, but this one surprised me. I especially liked "Down the Scum Quarter" but "the Lightning Bringer" really wasn't to my taste.
