Nikhil Mahirrao nikhil3801 — Great science reading by and for the non-scientist. I know I don't understand all of much, but, after reading it, I feel like I understand at least a tiny bit of everything. I applaud Bryson for branching out from what he usually does - fantasticly snarky travel writing - while staying true to his comic narrative voice.

Wade Smith papagrafea53 — Overall, the book is an excellent read. Sadly, not all of the stories are strong, and even within the 13 stories presented in this book there is evident plot recycling. Still, this is a must read for any fan of Fantasy or any aspiring author. Howard's descriptions are often vivid without dragging on, though he does have an over-fondness for some words (Thews and Loin-Cloth among them).

valentinaprietoac03
Valentina Prieto valentinaprietoac03 — While the 80s might have had totally awesome music, television, and movies, it was not the height of literature. Nevertheless, I discovered this book already on my to-read list was conveniently published in 1985 (when I needed to read one from my birth year). Seventeen years after a somewhat-vaguely-explained apocalyptic event, Gordon is a wanderer just trying to push his way further west and keep a low profile. Things change when he is robbed of everything but soon stumbles upon a deceased postman. Stealing his clothes and creating a lie that the Restored United States is making its first priority to reestablish communication via post offices, he talks his way into warm food and lodging at settlements across Oregon. The first half was great, watching Gordon's lie grow bigger and bigger until he sees that it's actually giving people hope. Seeing the different settlements was also interesting, though some of them definitely felt dated. The last section was a little more philosophical/political/a battle between the big bads and didn't hold my attention quite as much. Still, I would suggest it as a readalike for fans of The Road (though Postman is not as bleak), On the Beach (not as hopeless), or Station Eleven (not as satisfying).

iamrowie
Rowielyn Nocon iamrowie — Title: Vampire Instinct Author: Joey W. Hill Release Date: July 2011 Genre: Erotic /BDSM Paranormal Romance Pages: 448 Series: Book VII of the Vampire Queen Series Publisher: Berkley Heat ISBN: 978-0425241264 Posted: August 2011 Reviewer: Barb Rating: 5 stars Heat Level: III Winner of Risque Reviews Top Pick Award (only given for a rating of 4.5 stars or higher) Summary: After being raped and seeing the man she loves killed right in front of her, by one of the young fledging vampires Elisa is trying to save, to say Elisa is traumatized is putting it mildly. Yet with a lioness heart Elisa fights for the lives of the other fledglings when her mistress is ready to have the six surviving fledglings’ put down along her attacker. When her mistress offers Elisa youthful fledglings what may be their only hope of surviving. Elisa jumps at the chance to save her young charges. Elisa dusts off her grief and heads into the unknown as only a person of servitude would know how. Malachi, a Native American Indian before he was made a vampire, is known for his work in rehabilitating feline predators. Malachi’s understands better than most, what it takes to survive. However, even the king of the jungle knows when he’s met his match. And Malachi’s is about to meet his when Elisa enters his camp and proves she isn’t afraid of his roar, or his bite! With so much riding on how these next few weeks, emotions are running high. Elisa and Malachi are blindsided when they discover it’s not just the fledgling’s survival that’s at stake. As passions are opened and desires become more than just a moment shared between them, Elisa and Malachi are hurled into the world of vampire politics. Something neither has any way of preparing themselves for. Now the only thing that may save Elisa and Malachi is to give into something even more dominant than a vampire…Love. Review: Hill has done it again, thoroughly knocking me on my ass with the latest installment in her vampire series, Vampire Instinct. If asked why, my answer would be simple. Vampire Instinct is a contradiction in terms it is as rough as it is soft and when the philosophical and spiritual aspects clash they fight for dominancy almost as much as the characters do. Of course, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention that Vampire Instinct is so scorching hot, you might want the fire department on speed dial to put out any spontaneous combustion that might happen while you’re reading. Vampire Instinct is just another example of Hill’s talent as a novelist. Although the story is set in 1954 the plot is timeless, because it provides more than just entertainment, it presents itself as a literary novel as well. Hill is spot on once again with writing that is exceptional. Her writing is complimented with characters that are fully developed, coupled with scenes so vividly drawn they become a character themselves. Within this story you’ll find there is a lesson to be learned, as it touches on the social etiquette of the era. Look also for another message to be conveyed, moral and otherwise, that will be as important a hundred years from now as it is today. That the real malevolence is when hate and prejudices are given enough fuel to gain strength, because evil has no bias as to whom it enlists. However, what will keep the reader riveted to each page is the emotional turmoil that, Malachi and Elisa (especially Elisa) have to endure; just to get them to where they need to be. The turmoil is almost palpable as the pages turn, so will the reader be absorbed in their emotions. Tears will form from so deep inside it will feel like a damn broke, taking with it not only the reader’s heart, but their soul, as well. Not even the vampires Hill writes about would be able to resist getting carried away in the steam of emotions that this story brings. What else does Vampire Instinct bring? Vampires so enthralling your heart will be racing – check Sexual tension- check Romance (notice I put the sexual tension first)- check A bit of horror- check Humor (witty humor even)-check Sex…(Oh yea and Hill can throw down some of the best, most erotic sex scenes I have ever read) -check Tortured hero- oh mama…I mean check The perfect erotic paranormal romance – check!!! ~Barbara Mazzuca

_ressida_ridal
Cressida Bridal _ressida_ridal — This book articulated a number of things I have often thought about. Its tone and arguments are uncompromising. It's an interesting snapshot of British society in the early 21st century and challenges a number of received notions on such topics as the efficacy of brandishing "Not in my name" banners at anti-war marches, minute's silences and the wearing of empathy ribbons to show solidarity for . The book makes for uncomfortable reading regarding the way in which people choose to show how much they care and why they care.
