Very quick 100-page read consisting of three short stories all based around the theme of the title. Julien is smitten by the young girl across the square but she sees him as a large, simple, ugly man - until the night she realises he could serve a purpose. Nantas is at desperation point - penniless and starving and ready to end it all, then the servant from his landlord's house calls and offers him a proposition. The young Baroness sits rapturously listening to the young priest's raging sermon, but he is more interested in fine food and wines. Quite different to the Zola that I have read in the past and I don't think I would have guessed these stories were written by him. They were simple to read and pleasant enough, but not really in the same league as Nana and his other great works. However I passed a couple of hours enjoying them.

I enjoyed the novel. It was a love triangle between, Bartley, Winifred, his wife and Hilda, a friend. He loves his wife and starts to appreciate his life at his age while he loves being reminded of his youth when he is in Hilda's presence. He decides to stop seeing Hilda and she cannot let him go. Winifred continues to be in Alexander's corner concerning his work. Unfortunatley, Alexander is killed in an accident at the Moorlock Bridge. Winifred lives her life in sorrow while remembering her husband. Hilda continues living her life as a youth.

I waited for this book for so long that I kind of forgot what it was supposed to be about, and when it did come out, all I knew was that I had to read it. And, well, let's just say it was worth it! 12 Princesses. I've read quite a few versions of this, actually, and I've always been fond of it. I think it's my favorite fairy tale because not only is it about magic and true love but its also a lot about family bonding and, well, with 12 sisters, I think a bit of fun cannot be missed. And dancing. I can't dance for my life, but it was always something I've been fascinated by - the grace and beauty involved. So, yes, this book already held a lot of promise and lure to me. Now, after I've read it, I can say that it was just as satisfying as I'd expected. The characters are as fun as I'd hoped - Azalea is our main character, the eldest whose love for her sisters triumphs all evil; Bramble with her quick wit and mischief; Clover, the beautiful and sweet one; and the rest, each one's name starting with the next letter of the alphabet, the last being baby Lily. I have to say, sorry, that Clover is my favorite - because, one, I've always liked her type of character and how her story goes and, two, her name holds special meaning for me. Enough said on that, this was a great novel, and I look forward to reading others from the same author. Young adults - this is a fairy tale you wont soon forget!
