Although I’m not hugely familiar with the story of Robin Hood, I was aware of its basic gist thanks to having watched the Disney version when I was little. You know wasn’t present in that version? Yep, that would be Will Scarlet. So for me, A.C. Gaughen’s Scarlet was an introduction to the character of Will in the form of a female and seeing how that affected her relationship with the Merry Men. Scarlet was a really complex character; and the more I got to know her, the more I liked her. She’s independent, smart, and knows how to wield knives (which I think is awesome) but is also impulsive, secretive – I kind of guessed her secret pretty early on – and prickly. Though she keeps threatening to walk away from Robin and the Merry Men, she’s totally loyal to the core. I thought Gaughen did a fantastic job of creating Scarlet’s first person voice as I could easily imagine her talking like a medieval peasant in my head. As for the other characters, I thought Much was interesting but wasn’t too fond of Little John or Robin Hood. I didn’t like how controlling John was with Scarlet once he decided he was interested in her or how Robin only blamed Scarlet for messing the dynamics of their group just because he was jealous of her and John. As well, I thought the later portion of the book featured too much of the drama surrounding the love triangle and would have instead preferred more of the fantasy and action. The other thing that I didn’t enjoy was the ending since it felt far too open-ended. After finishing Scarlet, I immediately went on Goodreads to see if it was the first book in a series but at this point, it's still listed as a standalone.

Sorry RLS, but I wanted to fall asleep while I was reading it. Okay, okay, I didn't really want to fall asleep (that much). It got exciting at page 37. It was just really hard to read 'cuz it had a lot of old-fashioned and notical language. I got the overall gist of it, and it was pretty good.

I don't think-even as a writer-I would ever have the right words to say how great this book was. It rendered me speechless

One does not write an entire book dedicated to ABBA Gold unless one is the kind of person prone to sentences such as: "And so I should admit that 'SOS' is not only my favorite ABBA song, it is my favorite song of all time, encapsulating everything that makes pop glorious, everything that makes life worth living." (Page 56) And one does not read such a book unless one is prepared -- nay, eager -- for such sentences.

This is the story of Adam. On the way to his Uncle's funeral, his twin sister Anna is abducted by a lunatic hell bent on setting off 12 nuclear bombs on Christmas Eve. Chaos then ensues as Adam hunts for Anna. In his quest he teams up with a church robbing mobster called Filbert and a Croatian clown called Cherry Sundae who appears to only speak Spanish. Along the way he meets all manner of weird and wonderful people, some who help and some who hinder him in his search for his sister. This was on the face of it a thriller, but it was irreverent and laugh out loud funny. Over the course of 6 days poor Adam goes through more drama than any sane person should. The trouble is he's an idiot and bad luck seems to follow him. That being said he is a loveable idiot. I loved the characters - all nutters the lot of them but I cared about what happened to them and where their stories took them. The pace of the book was brilliant and I could not put it down, eventually reading it in two sittings. The humour was spot on, and the thriller aspects were, well, thrilling! The ending was great, and felt right for the book. It was an enjoyable romp and I couldn't help but feel for Adam as he tried desperately to find his but being blocked at every turn. I recommend this for people who like their thrillers with a touch of humour. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review.
