Jordan Randall jordanconductor — Imagine Life with a Well-Behaved Dog is a wonderful training manual for anyone who has a dog or is thinking of getting one. It is well organized covering a variety of topics ranging from considerations before adopting, obedience training and caring for dogs with special needs. The layout allows the reader to either read from start to finish or quickly flip to specific topics by consulting the index. I liked the addition of a “fun things to do with your dog” section detailing lesser known dog sports like fly ball, earth trials and disc dogs. Julie Bjelland does an excellent job laying out force free training methods that will help owners improve their bonds with their dogs and get the pups to listen to commands. She covers all the basic tricks an owner would expect (sit, down, stay, heel) as well as some more complicated ones like high-five and play dead. Inside you’ll also find tips on now to handle common problems like excessive barking, separation anxiety, chewing and aggression. The steps are easy to follow and provide warning signs so even if your dog doesn’t display bad behaviors you know what to watch for to stop it before it starts. My two complaints about the book are its repetitive nature and questionable spay/neutering advice. At 256 pages the book isn’t long but it feels like it would have been much better as a slim 200 page-training manual. I agree with the author it is important to be calm when training, but a detailed description of her meditation techniques felt out of place and some of the pictures and quotes felt superfluous. Also there are numerous letters from owners with problems, the solutions to these problems was usually the same information we just read retold in slightly different words or with bullet points. My other complaint is Julie restates the ASPCA’s recommendation of getting your dog spayed or neutered at 6 months. Current scientific literature shows this is likely too early and you should wait until your dog reaches sexual maturity (12 to 18 months) to avoid potential health risks. (see Laura J. Sanborn’s Long-Term Health Risks and Benefits Associated with Spay / Neuter in Dogs)

Fabio Echegaray fabioechegaraycd15 — I think its kind of confusing to me, but it is still good and interesting!! Try it! Well, first, you have to start from the very first book, or you will really get confused, as quick, when you start the first page of the book! Unless you read the explaining part. It is really, good. Just read the first book, before you read the others. If you tell you that you are not confused even though you started at book 3, i wouldn't believe you, and i guess i would never believe you!! (Well, that you read it without confusing yourself.) Unless you are Kathryn Lasky. My Rating: 5 out of 5

Christopher Gimmer cgimmer — Just finished my 6th read of this book--reading one section a day. Will start my 7th read again tomorrow. Needless to say, I obviously love this book and its MANY insights.

Tineke Rosseel tros — Although I’m not hugely familiar with the story of Robin Hood, I was aware of its basic gist thanks to having watched the Disney version when I was little. You know wasn’t present in that version? Yep, that would be Will Scarlet. So for me, A.C. Gaughen’s Scarlet was an introduction to the character of Will in the form of a female and seeing how that affected her relationship with the Merry Men. Scarlet was a really complex character; and the more I got to know her, the more I liked her. She’s independent, smart, and knows how to wield knives (which I think is awesome) but is also impulsive, secretive – I kind of guessed her secret pretty early on – and prickly. Though she keeps threatening to walk away from Robin and the Merry Men, she’s totally loyal to the core. I thought Gaughen did a fantastic job of creating Scarlet’s first person voice as I could easily imagine her talking like a medieval peasant in my head. As for the other characters, I thought Much was interesting but wasn’t too fond of Little John or Robin Hood. I didn’t like how controlling John was with Scarlet once he decided he was interested in her or how Robin only blamed Scarlet for messing the dynamics of their group just because he was jealous of her and John. As well, I thought the later portion of the book featured too much of the drama surrounding the love triangle and would have instead preferred more of the fantasy and action. The other thing that I didn’t enjoy was the ending since it felt far too open-ended. After finishing Scarlet, I immediately went on Goodreads to see if it was the first book in a series but at this point, it's still listed as a standalone.

Stephanie Sgroi sgroi — I have read this one over and over again. I like that it is only one volume because it makes it easy to keep track of everything, but I also kind of wish there were more. XD It is a really sweet story.

angie_2003
Angie Cárdenas angie_2003 — Laura let the sources speak in this book which is exactly why it's so good. She turned upside down the idea that all women in 1950s America were cooking from cans and boxed mixes. She makes the point that this is what the advertisers who tried to sell these products would have you believe. Underneath the images of the happy housewife baking cake from a mix were thousands of women cooking as they always had -- from scratch.
