I thoroughly enjoyed this. I spent more time with this than I usually do with fiction, but Austen's prose and characterization are just too good to rush through. The internal emotional subtlety Austen elucidates while retaining her witty narrative distance is remarkable, and I can't wait to read more of her works. Emma next?

Unfortunately I never read these books as a child so my adult mind had a bit of difficulty making the imaginative leaps, but once it did, I could easily see how these became classics. Because of this series of books, I was reminded how we need to just be, think, believe, and realize that we are part of something larger than ourselves.

I actually really liked this book. But then again, that was before I went and got myself a secondary degree in gender studies. With this new armor of intellect, I bet I'd find Brownmiller's account of so-called second wave feminism riddled with hetero-classist tendencies. Ahhh, how I long for my innocent and unbridled feminism.

What could be better for a light, quick read than to combine cats and murder mystery? Works for me.

Be prepared to read this in one sitting. Impossible to put down. Touching, frightening, thought-provoking.

Find out everything about Alcibiades and how exponentially sexier 5th century Athens becomes to the eye of the historian every time the young man with the curly hair shows up. De Romilly writes beautifully. The Greek Translation is also pleasantly read.
More of a two and a half. Tolkienesque epic fantasy is so, so longgg. I began the book in earnest. How can one undo that kind of curse? Then the characters were recruited, the past was told and the story begin to drag on and on and on and on. We kept hearing how Devin is so moved by things and try to be silent and thoughtful, how noble Alessan is, how suffering Baerd is and how spunky Catriana is (I liked Tomaz, ha!) I almost quit after the awful castle Borga session. Seriously? Alienor is so ridiculous and out of place. And don't let me begin on the secret monster-fighting sect girl who, of course, ended up sleeping with one of the heroine. Anyhow, I strived to the end and the last 100 pages or so are such a pageturner. Yes, the prose is still annoying sometime and Devin still has the tendency to be so friggin sentimental over every friggin thing and I did laugh at Alessan's declaration of love (damn it, I was teary at the scene before then this...utterly cheesy scene just pop up). I loved how the curse end and the aftermath. If not for the last 100 pages, this book would get 2 stars for me, because it's not a bad book and I could see why many like it. I'd say anyone who love Lord of the Ring should try Tigana but if you struggled through the Fellowship of the Rings like me then you could skip it.

Overall, the book is an excellent read. Sadly, not all of the stories are strong, and even within the 13 stories presented in this book there is evident plot recycling. Still, this is a must read for any fan of Fantasy or any aspiring author. Howard's descriptions are often vivid without dragging on, though he does have an over-fondness for some words (Thews and Loin-Cloth among them).
