This book has so much depth to it, so many tangents to persue, and yet it's possible to fly through it, enjoying the stories even as you imagine the layers of meaning underneath. The conversations that the characters have with each other bypass the usual habits and formalities and are thrilling in their pulling together of all the knowledge they've soaked up. The knowledge the mother and son have doesn't stay in books, it infuses their experiences in mythical, funny and sad ways.

It's a nice, popular introduction to Kurdish Jewry. The author got a little on my nerves, but Yona Sabar sounds like a rebbe, my kind of rebbe. I mean he went to high school run by the Histadrut! old school. I give Ariel thumbs up for popularizing Mizrahi experiences in Jewish suburban America.

The 1987 Newbery Medal winner Kind of an interesting tale for younger readers in which all the characters (even the king, I think) learn a lesson. Loved the illustrations by Peter Sis. Liked the use of few "made-up" words by the author.

Recently (in say the last 3-4 months) I have plowed through "THE FAMOUS MEMOIRS" such as Running With Scissors, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, The Sports Guy's Book, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (Actually I read that one years ago) and most recently this one. If you're only going to read one of those books, read this one. It's quick. It's amusing. It's somewhat educational. Bourdain is massively full of himself (to write 300 pages about your own life, you pretty much have to be) but writes well, and is self-deprecating enough that you don't despise him by the end. I would rank the memoirs thusly. Bourdain Eggers (a bit maudlin, but well written) Flynn (depressing, self-pitying, a bit holier than thou at times, but worth a read) Simmons (Even though I hate the Red Sox, and therefore hate him a little) Burroughs (massively overrated, gets by on shock value)

The recent history of Nicaragua is about as fascinating and tragic as histories get.

I enjoyed this book. It does a good job of describing an era and also captures the way humans really work. The biblical parallels were interesting as well, and the study of human nature was quite apt, I thought. It it is a bit long and at times might be a bit slow for some people, so any recommendation I would give would come with that caveat, but overall I thought it was a great book, especially if you are familiar with California. My favorite characters were Lee and Samuel.

Really did not like the present tense telling of the story. Found it a bit confusing when the author needed to add in a flashback... The storytelling was a bit choppy and I found myself having to "read between the lines" to get the full impact of the ending.

A fairly typical Agatha Christie. Written in the late 60s, so it contains "flowery young men with long hair, and dour young women in need of a good wash". This is a Hercule Pirout story. Actually a surprising ending - I didn't expect it.
