Nania Leal _ania77 — This book has so much depth to it, so many tangents to persue, and yet it's possible to fly through it, enjoying the stories even as you imagine the layers of meaning underneath. The conversations that the characters have with each other bypass the usual habits and formalities and are thrilling in their pulling together of all the knowledge they've soaked up. The knowledge the mother and son have doesn't stay in books, it infuses their experiences in mythical, funny and sad ways.

Robbie Shoker robbieshokerx — I really liked this book. It should be required for all teenagers. I wish I had been able to read it when I was a youth.

maisonpascal
Maria Shpagina maisonpascal — A highly disappointing book/trilogy, though most of that really isn't the books' fault. No, it's my parents fault, for naming me after the main female character, who now turns out to be basically a passive, very beautiful, 'charming'... well... nothing. And charming, as the observing Forsytes explain, is less to do with having a sparkling personality than with being silent, and not saying an awful lot, while looking beautiful. (Women should be seen and not heard, after all. Grrr.) Not exactly something I've either lived up to, or aspired to live up to, though I still have just enough obligatory fondness left for Irene to be irritated by the actress cast to play her in the last BBC remake of the books. Seriously, the one character trait this woman has is to be insanely beautiful, and you cast... well, never mind. On the other hand, and I know it's rather backward, but Soames, sad little man of property at the center of these tales, I really did have a fondness for. It's not his fault he's an emotionally-stunted, callous little douche who sees everything, including people, as property. Really! Ahh Victorian England, you have a lot to answer for... and for some of it, we owe you, actually. Anyway, Soames, although he's clearly not someone who would be pleasant to meet, is still a fascinating, well-drawn character, and he tries. God bless him, he may be an emotional cripple, but he gives his creepy proprietal love to the very utmost of his potential. Finally, if nothing else, the first 50 pages or so are worth reading (before the stupid Irene plot kicks in) for the biting, and rather hilarious, descriptions of the Forsytes and their world. Sarcasm for the win! (P.S - after thinking about it more over the next day, I realise that there really is a lot to like about this book, which is full of well-drawn, complicated characters. And even the bland nothingness of Irene probably does have a point to it - putting us, as readers, into the position of Soames and Forsytes (as Jolyon would use the term, to describe a whole section of society), without any way of fathoming her feelings and her motives. We don't get to kid ourselves that we're special and that different from Soames, because we have nearly as little clue to her as he does. Which is a neat trick, though it doesn't entirely come off successfully. But she's still a highly disappointing namesake to have.)

Kumamoto Native freebiesc63e — This is a quick read, and is in general full of good reminders (be gentle with yourself! love what you love! pursue your passions! have compassion!) but it was not in any way life-changing, nor did it make me happier or tell me anything I didn't already know. But sometimes a reminder of things I already know is nice, and this was a perfectly pleasant and moderately amusing reminder.
