This is another project to do with my lovely Kindle. The popularity of ebook readers have brought on an avalanche of self-published literture. Many argue that 'literature' is an overstatement in this case, and I decided to see if it is true. Just how bad exactly are all these self published books? Will I suddenly discover a real gem? Every now and then I am going to read an absolutely random self-published novel that I can find for cheap on my kindle and here is the review of my first adventure. While I didn't strike gold the first time round, I didn't end up breaking a waste pipe either. 'Trust Fund Drug Den' is a fairly decent effort. It is a novella about a young gay boy and his life in New York as a flatmate of another gay boy but a rich and unbelievably spoiled one. As you can imagine the thoroughly rotten Andre drags our narrator downwards. The opening scene is very good but then for a while it seems like the book doesn't know where it is going. It eventually finds its way and becomes quite engaging and convincing, however the scene leading up to the climax needs some working on because flat. Generally it seems like it is work in progress, it could easily be turned into a real novel (Rather than a novella). Of course, there are the usual things: spelling mistakes and some clumsy writing like: "With their deaths, everything changed and many things stayed the same." Huh? "The dining car of the Metrolines sways just enough to spill coffee onto the standing table at which I am drinking coffee and eating an egg sandwich." "I return to my room and put on flip-flops before myself showering." Don't worry, it is not all that bad. But why, oh, why is the whole thing in the present tense? And then there is of course the God awful cover and a God awful subtitle ('Young, Rich and Confused in pre-Recession Manhttan' ? Please don't). All in all, Broome Saunderman should just take it home and rewrite it, pump it up and pitch it to an agent.

This story was about a young boy who went missing. The fortune teller had told his mom that his presence was always with her. One day his father and mother got a call from a person asking them to fly to Europe to come and identify if the dead body was their son. Indeed it was there son. They flew back and buried Derek. Derek's sister Maxine began getting phone calls saying that it was Derek. At first she didn't know what to believe. She began pondering the whole idea of it. Thinking that it could really actually be him, it could be him as a ghost, or it could be someone playing a really mean joke on her. One day Maxine got another call claiming to be from her brother. He had told her to meet him at his grave after school that day. When she arrived she saw Derek's arch enemy. He began beating Maxine up. Derek began pretending that he was a spirit scaring him. Derek had never died. He ran away from home, but was scared back to his family when he read his own death in the paper.

This book is about a guy named Sam LaCroix who works at a fast-food resturant and winds up in a heap load of trouble which leads him to find out that he is a necromancer. I've read many reviews about this book being funny and just really good in general. I liked this book and in some ways I am very happy that I listened to the reviews but I also had a tad bit of a hard time getting through it. I felt at some moments it was slow and my focus was wanning. Other times I got through it and really liked the real-ness of the characters. I like the story in general and wouldn't be surprised if there were a sequel, but it wouldn't be needed. This book is best as a stand-alone. I liked the characters, especially Sam. The narration goes back and forth between characters, which I liked.

I read this book in about two days and it would've been most likely less than one if I didn't have to work. Even so, I work at a library and would try to sneak in as many pages as possible while hiding in the stacks. This book is the most rewarding of any series book I've ever read. You find out so much and the reader is constantly on the cusp of finding out something more and the world of Harry Potter becomes richer and richer. I wish I could wipe my memory clean just to be able to read the book again and enjoy the thrill of discovery once more! Yes, I'm aware of how geeky that is.

Enjoyed it, was an easy summer read. Some tense moments, some tender moments. If I learned anything from this book, it would have to be that we all have the power to survive if we dig deep enough.
