Valya Karnavalova valentinoxe5d0 — This story was about a young boy who went missing. The fortune teller had told his mom that his presence was always with her. One day his father and mother got a call from a person asking them to fly to Europe to come and identify if the dead body was their son. Indeed it was there son. They flew back and buried Derek. Derek's sister Maxine began getting phone calls saying that it was Derek. At first she didn't know what to believe. She began pondering the whole idea of it. Thinking that it could really actually be him, it could be him as a ghost, or it could be someone playing a really mean joke on her. One day Maxine got another call claiming to be from her brother. He had told her to meet him at his grave after school that day. When she arrived she saw Derek's arch enemy. He began beating Maxine up. Derek began pretending that he was a spirit scaring him. Derek had never died. He ran away from home, but was scared back to his family when he read his own death in the paper.

Luka Ritonja lukaritonja — I really enjoyed this, it was slow-moving and thoughtful and really beautifully written. I loved Farren, I liked the way he took such pleasure from simple things and the beauty of the natural world. He saw the best in everyone and found stuff to be positive about even in the face of overwhelmingly awful circumstances. He was an optimist, and I felt a glow of kindred-spirit-ness with him. I wanted to hang out with him and enthuse about the way the sun lit up the squares of different coloured crops in the paddocks, "like rectangles of paint in a paint box". It was also a really good, realistic exploration of PTSD and how it affected the soilders that came back from WWII (particularly Farren's older brother Danny). Farren and his friend Robbie had a lot of interesting discussions about whether the war was a good or bad thing and why the glorious, patriotic way it was portrayed by the radio and government and so forth was so different to the account given by the people who came back from it. I did find that it dragged on a little bit, however, especially at the end - and I'm a fan of slow, character-driven books without too much action or plot, so I think a fair few of the intended audience (teenagers) would probably find this quite boring.

Ahmad Aloufi ahmad2203c68c — This is the second book in "the Walk" series. I enjoyed the first book but still found this one to be more enjoyable. Alan wakes up in a hospital after being stabbed. He finds one of the ladies he helped in the last book sitting at his bedside. She takes him in as he recovers only to find that he is also helping her.

Pauline Jones paulinejones — 1950's lesploitation novel, best read with bated breath. Marvel at the trashy covers! gasp at the plot synopsis! thrill at the rigid butch/femme dynamic!
