I love this book. It is written well after the deaths of the all the characters involved, but they are all tied together because they are all waiting for the old king after he has served his sentence in purgatory. As they sit in their afterlife heaven, they recall the goings ons of their times. It is really quite lovely, and one must appreciate the queen. She is exactly what she ought to be for she is amazingly headstrong. A wonderful novel!

Owen, Frank, Audrey, and Jin-Ae meet online while discussing their suicide attempts. The four bond quickly and start chatting on a regular basis and end up forming a pact. They will meet, take a road trip to visit the graves of celebrities that have committed suicide, and end their trip and their lives, together, in Death Valley. The story sounded very promising and as a reader I was expecting the raw emotions of a book like IMPULSE by Ellen Hopkins, but instead it just came across as a little silly. The characters didn’t really ring true. A few important aspects, which could have used some discussion, about Audrey and Owen are left completely hanging and the conflicts in the story are too quickly resolved and leave the reader unsatisfied in the end.

I've only read some of this, but what I read was terribly reasonable. The chapter on art, for instance, discusses all sorts of crazy things philosophers have said about art and separates out what's reasonable in what they're saying from what's absurd. It's very depressing to have someone so reasonable do this for you, though. And it's kind of boring to read so I wouldn't actually assign it in an intro. class.

The Mistborn trilogy is just an amazing piece of work. It has just about everything right, and I just love every minute of it! The plot is intricately done over the three books. The first one does the typical fantasy destroy the emperor trilogy, but only in one book. The second is essentially the aftermath of those events and trying to stabilize the city/country. The third is then when stuff gets insane and it's save the world from an ultimate evil story. I could go on about the story, but I think those generalizations are good enough for now. If not, then there are other reviews and blurbs and such. The characters are a main part of this trilogy. If they weren't as interesting as they were, then this series would lose a lot of it's charm. That's mainly because the dialogue and character interactions are just a delight to read. Vin is a strong female lead, and her struggles for a stable life are very interesting. Other highlights are Kelsier (the most awesome fantasy book character I've read ;)!), Elend, Ham and Chee...I mean Breeze, Sazed, and Spook (in the third book at least). One thing to note is the magic system. To put it simply, it's one of the best, if not the best, magic system I've ever had a delight to read. If the plot and characters don't do it for you, the magic system will. There are strict rules for it, and yet there are many unknown details about it. I would pay full movie ticket price (with popcorn) just to watch one of these fights! (Especially that one in the third with Vin at the end) And that leads to the violence. If you are squeamish, you might not like some of what happens. It's not the most detailed thing ever, but there are disturbing scenes in the series. You are warned. Plus death. There is also a decent bit of swearing, and there is a bit of nudity and implied sex, so just keep that in mind if your wanting to recommend this to a younger reader. The Good: The magic system, the action scenes, the plot, the characters, how this is basically a typical fantasy plot but purposefully done almost mockingly The Bad: Might seem a bit TOO epic to some with the later two books Warnings: Violence This is my favorite book series for a reason, and that reason is because it's completely awesome. Get it from your local bookstore, the library, or wherever you get your books!

300 pages longer than book 1 and with a more even pace made this one feel less gripping. but it's not altogether useful to consider this as a book on it's own. it serves suitably well as the middle book of a trilogy. certainly i still enjoyed it and look forward to the final part :)
