I read it on the plane ride to and from my destination. It was okay. There was great contrast between the main character's choices and life and her loser boyfriend. I read it to see if it would be good to recommend to the book club I'm in.... it's not.

When I first read this I was so excited someone had managed to reasonably accumulate so much of this particular variety of comparative history. I recall being impressed by ideas moving through history, time and again there being such movements toward liberty of self expression. I believe recent times reflect that pattern in an oddly popular manner. Its been assimilated somehow via capitalism or something commercial. Now it seems as though the people who in past times might have been subversive, critical, are now our brand name hipsters whose goals includes the habits of an Imelda Marcos. and so on. I've been considering re-reading it because I have 2 sons entering into the pre-adolescent period of serious and deliberate consideration over their identity and the means of self expression available to them, either immediate or by proxy. They are artistic and they are kind. They don't like what they see happening around them but they enjoy taking advantage of it. I do think this is a useful book, still. I'll let you know when I set about rereading it...

questo periodo mi è utile ancora una volta per studiare, per recuperare libri che per spocchia o ignoranza ho sempre trascurato. e quindi scopro che libri come questo, chiamati alternamente "di intrattenimento" o "di genere", riescono ad arrivare a livelli di approfondimento della psicologia, di costruzione dell'intreccio e di coinvolgimento del lettore straordinari. questo libro è un gioiello per la capacità di disorientare continuamente il lettore: da che parte sta Alec Leamas? ed è una pedina o un burattinaio? le ultime 100 pagine sono un costante rivolgimento di campo. pura vertigine e esercizio di meningi. chapeau e addio alla spocchia.

Well, I tried, not once but twice. I found this book via the "if you like this author, you may like this author" type recommendation. Well, I love Terry Pratchett and I do not like Robert Rankin. It's interesting because the reviews of this book are so spilt. People either really like it or don't, and what's interesting is that the same people likely agree on other books. I think you either enjoy Rankin's verbose style or you don’t - it's that simple. For me, there is way too much dialogue in this book and not enough plot. I love dry English humor, satire, tongue-in-cheek, witty banter etc, HOWEVER not when it’s the ENTIRE novel without any break. In that case it's simply tiresome and forced. Apologies to those who really enjoyed this book, I really wanted to like it but my recommendation is to skip it and go straight to Jasper Ffore's The Big Over Easy which also covers the tragic death of Humpty Dumpty in a much more entertaining style. Reading this novel was a different experience for me. At times I absolutely loved it and other times I thought it was a waste of time and couldn't wait to finish it. Reading it was like climbing up a huge never-ending mountain and getting to the top and saying, 'Eh, ok'. It also had many of the same themes from some of his past novels (I've read The World According to Garp, A Widow for One Year, and The Cider House Rules)-- prostitues, wrestlers, older women, ect. At this point in reading Irving, I know some people love it, but to me it's gotten a little old.
