Don't use your faded memories of the stupid movie with Nicholas Cage as an excuse not to read this book. It's excellent. I love to read about World War II and this book portrays the aftermath of the war in the European Theater, an underexplored topic in all the zillions of war novels. The love story is sexy, the war business is sad and the book is very pretty.

Why are all the good books about dysfunctional families? Except for the last one-fourth of the book (which became kind of repetitive for me), I enjoyed the book and liked the fact that it was narrated by different members of the Price family. I didn't know anything about the history of Belgian Congo until I read this book.

I had trouble with this book. The story line was good just didn't like the way it was written. I had trouble getting into it. I may try again at a later date. I did try reading it 1 week before my due date so that could have played a part too.

The book that started it all... If you haven't read this book yet, you live under a rock. Even if you don't think you'll like it, read it anyway. I honestly thought it was a kiddie book when I got it for Christmas in high school. However, I've read every book in the series since, so there's got to be something to it. Even if you've read it & still don't like it, it's worth it for the water cooler conversationability and for the basic understanding of the characters that can be further explored to death on a more literary level. Fascinating case in point, the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education even compared Harry Potter to growing up Deaf... http://jdsde.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/r... "Harry" relates to everyone.

first of all, gaiman is just enjoyable all the way around to me... However, I am not well-versed in the history of gods/mythology, etc... And i'm sure I would've enjoyed a lot more of the jokes and references had I, well, known more. Otherwise, the "surface" story was intriguing, the premise, brilliant.
