I honestly thought it was a kiddie book when I got it for Christmas in high school. However, I've read every book in the series since, so there's got to be something to it. Even if you've read it & still don't like it, it's worth it for the water cooler conversationability and for the basic understanding of the characters that can be further explored to death on a more literary level. Why can't people get everything they want in classic literature? it's like the moment they do it isn't classic literature anymore. *update: I just reread this classic after reading about the movie remake and finding it on the shelf of the house I am staying at coincided happily. green - the light at the end of daisy's dock, the continent itself, a color of unobtainable longing, hope, illusion and purity. beautiful prose about creatures of the jazz age, glittering, fragile and impermanent. i realized in reading it that i am a gatsby, a child of the promise of this continent of the new - forever chasing the green light, the unreachable dream - recklessly believing in that orgiastic future. social status and daisy the golden girl vs the american promise of self creation and reinvention. seductive descriptions of jazz babies of all castes..this era is coming alive in many mediums at the moment. the kind of writing you find yourself reading over again just to enjoy the sound of the words, the potency of the description. now i am so excited about revisiting other books i raced through long ago. *whoah, this review heavily influenced by staying in roach infested apartment - I have overdone the purplish prose as some sort of attempted counterweight to ickiness of environment. basically, fitzgerald's bubbly jazzy prose is froth on the twenties - which I had forgotten.

Max Clement maxclement — The storytelling and story arc of this book I liked but the writing drove me a bit nuts. Conroy is just too in love with his own words and would have benefited from a severe editing. The dialogue is what drove this from a 3-star to a 2-star read. People don't talk like this to their friends, or anyone else for that matter. It distracted from an otherwise compelling, sometimes tragic, story.
