Good book. I love the way she gives you even the bad guy's point of view so that nothing is ever black and white. I was hoping for more of an ending, but I wasn't surprised.

i've probably read this 10 times now. i went through a john irving phase, and i ODed about half-way through. (140lb marriage is a terrible book, btw. don't do it). but this is one of my favorite books. it would be desert island number three, but it's a little too sad... i don't think it would be a good idea to isolate myself with it on an island to read again and again for eternity. that said, it's irving at his best. anyone who can take a family involved in incest and abuse and prostitution and suicide and still somehow make you love them and identify with them is a pretty fantastic writer. totally ironic (whatever that really means) and sympathetic. it's sad, and even painful, so i often think about picking it up, but don't. it takes a certain mindset. but everyone should read it at least once.

Although well written and intriguing, this book does have quite a bit of language and a few disturbing sexual incidents. I'll probably finish the book because I want to know what happens with the mystery aspect, but I would definitely not recommend this book to any of my friends. ...(now that I've finished)...this story really kept me entertained - I had my doubts about certain characters, I tried to predict how it would unravel, and I somewhat enjoyed the book. As I said, though, the graphic details and language were too much for me. I probably won't read any more books by this author. I think the idea was to help create an awareness of sex abuse towards women - this idea should have been more clearly desribed in the book's description.

It took me quite a while to get used to the narration by Jayne Entwistle of this audio book, so that could be part of why I had a hard time getting into the book in general. I found her performance as Flavia mostly grating, although I enjoyed her reading of other characters' voices much more. Once I was more used to her, I was able to pay attention to the story itself better. Flavia is certainly funny, particularly when talking about her older sisters, and precocious. I really enjoy what the people around her say about her to her. The mystery itself was very standard fare, based on the few mysteries I've read. It's a genre I really don't care for, so that isn't helping my rating here either. I would personally enjoy Flavia narrating a non-mystery novel much better.

I randomly watched the movie recently and felt like I should read the book since I never had to in high school or college. Boy, am I glad I didn't have to read it for a grade. That would not have gone well, much like the time I had to read "2001: A Space Odyssey". Looking forward to moving on to something a little more light-hearted.

Still have the childhood copy from when I was a kid. Really enjoy reading it to my kids now.

WOW. I have never cried so hard reading a book in my life. The ending is completely unexpected and makes you ache. Picoult does an amazing job presenting the characters so that you fully understand where they are coming from in the debate the book circles around. Hands down, the best Jodi Picoult book of them all.

Eh. Enjoyable. Woman-writing-as-man always...interesting. I've been reading a lot of circus books and what not so... but the female love-interest, she was just BORING and I didn't get why the progtagonist was all crazy for her. I just didn't get it. Meh. I did cry at the end though.

I will never look at the parable of the prodigal son the same way again. MacArthur explains the culture and what the people during the time the parable was told would have thought. Things that seemed like fillers for the story now become important details that bring the nature of each person (prodigal son, father, older son) to light in a way I had never quite grasped before. This is a great book, well told and interesting.

Very good. I read this book because I love G. C. Levine. I read Fairest first and loved it so then I read this book. If you like magic in Junior High School then you should read this book.
