I've been reading a lot of circus books and what not so... but the female love-interest, she was just BORING and I didn't get why the progtagonist was all crazy for her. I just didn't get it. Meh. I did cry at the end though.

Carlos Laki lakbee — Mrs. Samuel was my English teacher when I was twelve and I only put her name down because I'm tired of thinking of specific people to whom I want to recommend EACH BOOK. I recommend this to all of you, folks, all of you. Gavin is right (and I'm not just saying that because he said I was right about Waterland): this is a lovely novel, narrated by a bunch of old men and some other people. No, seriously, the old men are lovely. It's like you're sitting with each of them at a pub and hearing his life story, and then at the end, after you close the book, you realise how heartbreaking it all was. It's so different from Waterland I often can't believe the same man wrote them both, but it's Good.

Yaroslav Kirilenko _link_nk — ** spoiler alert ** Pemba was an interesting character that walked a fine line between her teenage self, and her adult author. Her thoughts and feelings perfectly addressed how a teenage girl would take moving to a new and unfamiliar place, but a few of her thoughts seemed a bit out of place. While I enjoyed the plot, the story itself seemed to have a few small holes in it. As a reader I was more curious about the slave girl whose spirit she was contacting, and the story didn't give full views of her or the rest of the town. I would think that with all the slavery and town history she and Abraham were delving into, that they would have mentioned more than just this vague murder mystery. In all, I did like the story, and the poems found inside were pretty cool as well. For a reluctant reader, or someone who doesn't wish to sit too long with a story, this is a PERFECT quick read.

If you're trying to think about your Christian beliefs in a meaninful way and you're tired of all the same old blah, blah, blah that you hear from the church and mainstream Christian writers, these three books are for you.
