I'm also very proud of the fact that the book does not demonize Islam or reduce the conflicts in Sudan to simplistic ideological battles between forces of Good and Evil. I am a little concerned about the role of women in the text, but overall, a book that will surely open minds and hearts.

özge Akarsu ozgeakarsu — It took me quite a while to get used to the narration by Jayne Entwistle of this audio book, so that could be part of why I had a hard time getting into the book in general. I found her performance as Flavia mostly grating, although I enjoyed her reading of other characters' voices much more. Once I was more used to her, I was able to pay attention to the story itself better. Flavia is certainly funny, particularly when talking about her older sisters, and precocious. I really enjoy what the people around her say about her to her. The mystery itself was very standard fare, based on the few mysteries I've read. It's a genre I really don't care for, so that isn't helping my rating here either. I would personally enjoy Flavia narrating a non-mystery novel much better.

I think Stephanie Meyer might have had a good idea, but it was poorly executed (and that's being nice). If Stephanie was trying to make a strong female character, she failed to notice the fact that all of Bella's strength and willpower come from loving an "god like" man. Sorry. no.

Marina Rakhimova makotokonno — I enjoyed reading it in Spanish, band was interested in the Dominican history. I found all the references to pop culture and sci-fi and fantasy culture distracting, especially all the footnotes. I didn't really like any of the characters, either.
