The 2002 Booker Prize committee was clearly on crack. This won, Fingersmith was shortlisted, and Autograph Man was longlisted. WTF??

love the series. I listed to this on audio books and the audio reader has a great voice and ranges to represent the characters!

This is a great book. I almost gave it 5 stars. If you liked the movie Fight Club, you'll enjoy this one. I love that feeling of oncoming twist to a plot - it just builds and builds.

i just loved this book. the main character's cyncism and hypocrisy was entertaining and insulting all at the same time. the way he devours women with his thoughts was sexy and crude. i can't remember the main character's name, but everyone knows or has met someone like him. he's one of those people that you can't stand but can't stay away from either. that's what makes the book so enjoyable. i read it while i was in santorini, greece on the beach. it was the perfect read.

excellent amnesia novel: Woman in a hotel with no memory of what happened before she got there. Everyday encounters at the station and shop and cafe take on eerie significance, and I was caught up in the intrigue. I liked the fact that it was Britain in the 70s too. Towards the end her past does catch up with her but Figes doesn't tie up all the loose ends (eg what about that suitcase of money?). I liked that. A bit like the film Repulsion at times although more genteel - she tries to get people to visit her!

The Warded Man has a great conceit at its center--namely, that demons rise from the Earth every night and try to kill everybody--and the book is at its best when it's dealing with the ramifications of that, which is most of the time. Story-wise, there's something of a slow burn, but it's utilized very well, as we're introduced to three main characters who don't meet each other until almost the end of the novel. They fit a bit too much into fantasy archetypes when you take a step back and look at them, but the novel takes the time to really flesh them out so that, most of the time, they feel like people. Personally, I always love seeing a regular person, who we get to know very well, become a legendary figure to everyone else, and that's provided very well where the titular character is concerned. All told, a very strong book, with the biggest flaws being things that could turn out to not be flaws, depending on how they're handled later on (funny how that works with series). Those maybe-flaws regard fun things like gender roles and the treatment of a Middle Eastern-like culture in the book--but I took both things (tentatively) as examples of ways in which the world goes crazy and regressive in such a situation (it's not like the European-like people are that great in an overall way either). So we'll see...

A big long read (well over 600 pages) about twentieth-century China. A personal account of Ms. Chang's family over three generations - her grandmother, a warlord's concubine with bound feet; her revolutionary mother; and herself. I think this is a very readable account of a big topic. Also note that Ms. Chang has also written a biography of Mao (2005) with her husband, Jon Halliday - would like to tackle that book someday!
