Brian Toro briantoro — The Warded Man has a great conceit at its center--namely, that demons rise from the Earth every night and try to kill everybody--and the book is at its best when it's dealing with the ramifications of that, which is most of the time. Story-wise, there's something of a slow burn, but it's utilized very well, as we're introduced to three main characters who don't meet each other until almost the end of the novel. They fit a bit too much into fantasy archetypes when you take a step back and look at them, but the novel takes the time to really flesh them out so that, most of the time, they feel like people. Personally, I always love seeing a regular person, who we get to know very well, become a legendary figure to everyone else, and that's provided very well where the titular character is concerned. All told, a very strong book, with the biggest flaws being things that could turn out to not be flaws, depending on how they're handled later on (funny how that works with series). Those maybe-flaws regard fun things like gender roles and the treatment of a Middle Eastern-like culture in the book--but I took both things (tentatively) as examples of ways in which the world goes crazy and regressive in such a situation (it's not like the European-like people are that great in an overall way either). So we'll see...

hitvox
Daivison Cardoso hitvox — Davis does a great job hashing out the ongoing issues which make another flu pandemic quite likely in the future. Ongoing negligence in the political sphere, profiteering by Big Pharma, placing profit over the needs of the people at large. The role of "megaslums" and the consolidation of agribusiness, specifically around swine and chicken-handling procedures which exponentially increase the potential for flu strains to cross-pollinate and grow stronger in some cases. The perils of pumping animals with hormones and antibiotics which beef them up and ramp up our tolerance to the same antibiotics we will need in the event of second-wave effects of a pandemic. Really, for as deathly frightening as the subject matter is, Davis does a great job of placing it in context and not fear-mongering...and maybe that is because its scary enough in its own right. As of its writing in 2005, it sounds like nothing is still getting done on the Governmental end, public health continues to be neglected in richer nations and next to non-existent in poorer countries, so I think its safe to say, if there is another 1918-style pandemic (bird flu or otherwise,) don't wait for anyone to come save your butt... Stock up on your foods and waters kids...buy your own Tamiflu, too! and you could skip the meat too..(wink!)

Alexander Farmon alexfarmon — I'm not going to rate this one yet because I just started listening to it. So far it is pretty interesting but I wanted to note that it has some bad language and adult themes even though it is from the perspective of a dog. OK I know a lot of people have liked this book and while I felt it was well written I just couldn't get into it. I am not a dog person so that may have a large part to do with it and I also have no interest in auto racing which was in the book a lot. The subject matter was pretty depressing and I felt sad. I do think it was an interesting idea to write from the perspective of the dog but really telling a human story.

vfdnafaas
Fasfac Asfasfs vfdnafaas — Most historical romances are sober affairs, with tortured heroes, Gothic settings, and haunted heroines being pursued by satanic villains. But this 1500's romance features laughter, bed-play, horseplay, and hi-jinks, with enough slapstick and teasing to lighten the darkest dungeon. A deliciously innocent young lady in waiting, Corrie has no idea that men are different from women. But after a wickedly exciting initiation by her cousin Anne, Corrie is immediately enchanted by a handsome Swedish visitor to the English court. Rugar Kallisson has plans of his own, and seduction is merely a means to an end. But innocent Corrie responds to him with such adoring and trusting passion that before long he is fighting for right and justice and sacrificing everything just to make the innocent blonde his bride. This is an original story, full of romance and fun, with great period research and a charming mixture of erotic sex, innocent laughter, and historical romance.
