I started reading Giles Blunt for his cop series set in North Bay because I used to live in North Bay. I started No Such Creature and it was a bit TOO realistic for me! After a couple of murders which had me almost in tears, I had to stop reading it. He write well and - unfortunately - I almost felt like I was there. It was hard to put the book down because I was very involved with the engaging protagonists. I'd recommend it highly if you are not prone to nightmares...

While I really enjoyed the stream of consciousness type writing in the first two parts of this book and maybe even the third part of the book, the fourth and final part suddenly become third person omniscient, and that really confused me. I thought that the last part was just kind of blah whereas the first part, for example, was poetic. The first half of the book also maintains a sense of mystery (you're not 100% sure what has happened between the siblings) that is very intriguing, but I found this element to be completely absent in the second half. Maybe I missed something. Maybe I need to read this again. Maybe this just isn't my style. At least now I can say I've read it. 3/5 stars.

Why for the love of all things urban fantasy is Darynda Jones relatively unknown in comparison to some of the others out in the genre? Her books are fantastic and it’s honestly a crying shame that her books on the shelves (electronic or otherwise) of more people. I really enjoyed First Grave on the Right, but I was in for a treat when I checked out the audiobook from my library. Lorelei King does an excellent job of narrating the story and capturing the various accents, personalities, and tones of the various characters. Her Reyes is to die for. (And Charlie almost does at least a number of times before the end of the book.) The plot is also excellent. The whodunit in this book is rather well done and left me guessing until the very end. It’s one of many threads in the story, all of which I thought were juggled pretty well for the most part. I admit that the murder mystery of the book occasionally tended to take more of a backseat to the Reyes story line at times, but I have to admit that I preferred that. The Reyes stuff was just too interesting, especially the Internet fan club stuff. This is an absolute must read for fans of urban fantasy. Unless the author pulls a complete 180 in the next few books or tries to drag this out until 450 books ala Laurell K Hamilton, this will probably be one of my faves.

I can't rate or review this book because I wrote it with Jeanette Longoria back in 2006. But I can say that this woman is amazing and I love her dearly. She is in her mid-80s now, but she hasn't slowed down and probably won't until she draws her last breath. She's one of San Antonio's most glamorous socialites, having married two of the world's wealthiest and most powerful men, but she is in no way impressed with herself or with what she's accomplished in her life. Each chapter in this book is a slice-of-life story pertaining to what Jeanette has learned about living beautifully and enjoying life. I hope you take a couple of hours to settle in and really absorb what this book has to say. It's short, easy to read, and filled with great tips on just about everything - from setting a lovely table to captivating the man you love. The lady knows what she's talking about!
