Gwynne manages to transform what could be an exhaustively detailed dry account into a gripping tale of historical scale. Not for the squeamish, Gwynne pulls no punches in his account - a major plus as far as I am concerned as the truth in this chapter should not be edited. The book contains tons of fascinating fact. For instance, did you know that Buffalo Hump (born ca. late 1790s to early 19th century — died 1870) was a Native American War Chief of the Penateka band of the Comanche Indians. His Nʉmʉ tekwapu (Comanche) name, properly transliterated, was Po-cha-na-quar-hip which meant "erection that won't go down" ? Or, that Isa-tai ("Wolf's Vulva" c.1840 — c.1890) was a Comanche warrior and medicine man of the Quahadi band. Originally named Quenatosavit (White Eagle), after the debacle at Adobe Walls he was known as Isa-tai which translates as "wolf's vulva" or "coyote vagina" ? Gwynne uses the life of Quanah Parker and Quanah's family as his focus to tie the epic saga together and provide a bigger than life character the reader can bond with. The Parker family could have their own book and the story of Quanah Parker is uniquely apropos as a microcosm of the larger story of the Native American tribes. If I could recommend only one book and it couldn't be any Brautigan or Vonnegut or Dick or Steinbeck or Robbins or McMurtry plus it had to be non-fiction then this would be it! :)

Jan škalda _an_ldo — One of the most ambitious science fiction worlds I've read since Dune, The Ophiuchi Hotline tells the story of a post-alien-invasion humanity eking out a living on the less hospitable worlds of the solar system. The survivors discover a deep space transmission they call the Ophiuchi Hotline (since it seems to come from a near star with the same name) filled with engineering information far beyond humanity's previous comprehension. These alien technologies transform daily life in outer space, but aren't enough to win back Earth. The Ophiuchi Hotline epitomizes what I look for in science fiction: a real discussion of how various forms of high technology will change society and humanity. For example, without giving too much away, in Varley's future memory recording and transplant into clones is routinely performed, making murder a misdemeanor property crime. Similarly, the availability of limitless body modifications, including gender swapping at will, have revolutionized ideas about sex and love, beauty and aging, and what it is to be human. The speculative elements are tied together with a compelling plot of espionage and intrigue, mostly centered around the movement to free Earth from the Invaders and discover the true meaning of the Ophiuchi Hotline. Varley does descend into bare exposition about technology and future history from time to time, but for the most part he allows the plot to reveal his world in pieces, as necessary. Overall, The Ophiuchi Hotline is considered a classic for good reason, and should make any science fiction fan's list.

Rafal Mirocha greystonecc5a2 — I started reading Giles Blunt for his cop series set in North Bay because I used to live in North Bay. I started No Such Creature and it was a bit TOO realistic for me! After a couple of murders which had me almost in tears, I had to stop reading it. He write well and - unfortunately - I almost felt like I was there. It was hard to put the book down because I was very involved with the engaging protagonists. I'd recommend it highly if you are not prone to nightmares...

João Victor vctrmsqt — This is the first Kurt Vonnegut book I've read, and I'm sorry I didn't read something of his sooner. I think the book was fantastic. The thought that something so small can change the whole world is scary, whether it be a new religion or a little bit of ice-nine.

Thays Thy thaysthy177f — I was excited to see Dodge take a bigger part of this book due to enjoying his part in Smash Cut. Dodge drops everything and races to Texas at the drop of a hat after receiving a phone call from an old flame, letting him know the daughter he hasn't seen since she was born was in trouble. On the trip Dodge contemplates meeting his daughter for the first time, along with the woman he never stopped loving. While helping with the investigation into the man now stalking his daughter Dodge does his best to keep both women at an arm's length and keep his secret. The story, told him flashbacks, tells the story of how Dodge and Caroline fell in and out of love. Dodge has a certain gruffness that is part of his charm. And while I don't like his choices in the past, I am happy to see he has a chance at happiness in the present.
