My first Bukowski will not be my last, though the novel did not leave any lasting impressions on me besides: 1. The protagonist has a lot of sex. 2. With girls mostly thirty years younger than him. That is pretty much the plot of the book, follow an ex-postman turned poet around on his sexcapades, and I say that without any touch of moral judgment. There is a line or two of real mastery, but mostly I spent the book flipping back a page or two to figure out which girl was which. [A short list]: Cassie, Sara, Debra, Dee Dee, Nicole, Mindy, Katherine, Joanna, Mercedes, Tammie, Cecelia, Liza, and my favorite, Lydia, insane but exciting and the only really interesting woman in this whole book.

This is the sequel to Massie's Dreadnought, and covers naval actions in WW I, with an exceptional examination of Jutland and Dogger Bank. Prior to the aircraft carrier, ship to ship actions were what generated the first arms race of the 20th century. The opening of WW II completely shattered that paradigm. Excellent book which covers the influence Churchill and Jackie Fisher had on the building of the Royal Navy. The size of the book should not discourage anyone from reading it. Massie's style is as a novelist, and a very good one at that. This book was a joy to read and sucked me right in.

My rating doesn't do this book justice. It was awesome, especially the edition with the pictures. Seriously, if you haven't read the edition with the pictures, you should. My dad summarized the story for me in about ten minutes as I just flipped through the pictures. None of it made sense, but the pictures were awesome!

Trish Perry's The Perfect Blend is a quick, fun and enjoyable read. Step Vandergrift is the product of helicopter parents and has no idea how to make good decisions about her life. Risking everything to prove her independence she agrees to marry, Rick Manfred. Only Rick doesn't show up for the wedding. Now Steph has burned all her bridges with her family and friends back home. She's stranded in a town where she hasn't a job, a home or a friend. Then Milly, the tea shop owner helps her out for a few week while she looks for other work. Of course she makes more and more mistakes with her impulsive decision making, all of which will have you laughing. Kendall James an eligible bachelor takes notice of Steph and oh how she wants to jump into love with him. Still for once she tries to hold back on her impulsive behavior. Can she? Read the book, it's delightful.

I actually couldn't get into his other books, but I thought this one was excellent. It's the story of an archaeological dig in Israel, but the book is basically two parallel stories--one from ancient times and one from modern day. In essence, one reads the story of what really happened in the area and is thus "in" on the secret of how certain items came to be buried where they are. At various intervals, the story switches to modern day and one reads about the archaeologists attempting to infer the actual story (that you now know) from the findings. I should say that the stories are converging rather then parallel; they do meet at the end in a satisfying way. Though the book is certainly dense and contains an incredible amount of detail, the two-stories-at-once plan in this novel really works to make it consistently interesting.

Holy pignolia, this took me a long time to read. But it was worth it. Zinn takes you from Columbus's arrival in North America all the way up to the crazy (read: corrupt) 2000 presidential election, highlighting the stories that don't normally get told in history textbooks or mainstream media. It's a "people's history," so he tells Vietnam from the POV of the protesters, industrialism from the workers, slavery from the slaves, etc. I learned a lot of new (and disturbing) aspects of American history reading this book. Zinn's also my favorite kind of historian-- he's clearly excited about and invested in the subject, so he writes about it in a lively voice, using specific examples and anecdotes to make it real. History doesn't feel dead in his hands; it is very much alive and even now informing the choices we make as a country. That said, this book is unapologetically left-leaning (Zinn explains that since so much of what is already written leans the opposite direction, he doesn't feel the need to keep his book balanced), so not everyone will appreciate it. It also assumes a baseline of American history knowledge in many places, so it would be well coupled with additional resources to lay out some basic facts about certain time periods or events (like wars). I recommend reading this book alongside something a lot fluffier if you're going to go for the long haul. Otherwise, pick a chapter and read it alongside other books from/about that period and let them inform each other.
