Rebecca Williams beckywillia57b — A good novel entwining history and fiction, past and the present. Rosnay pulls a story out of the obscurity of a shameful history that has been repeatedly swept under the rug by a government that wishes to deny it's complicity. Few Frenchmen know of this Jewish roundup of families with young children, and it happened in the heart of Paris. Outside of France, it is almost completely unknown. Rosnay's style reminded me of Tracy Chevalier, so when I read the author's notes at the end of the paperback, I wasn't surprised that she cited Chevalier as her inspiration. Her style is very similar to Chevalier's The Blue Virgin, another well-crafted book. For some reason, I find myself drawn to holocaust stories without even trying to seek them out. This was one of many books I picked up just because something appealed to me... cover art, reader comments, I'm not sure... and then found out they were WWII stories. Apparently, a part of me needs to hear the stories of those who have endured something horrific and hear how they endured and how some survived.

Ammar Sami dr_ammarsa25 — ** spoiler alert ** The book became really enjoyable when Mallory described his journey to India and Tibet. The writing also seemed to get better as Archer uses Mallory's letters to his wife. Why they were so in love is, however, insufficiently told. Perhaps it was her selfless support of the dream that kept him away for months at a time. This is great historical fiction. The description of WWI is heart-wrenching. Just a few years after, national pride was all about a Brit being the first man on Everest. So much so that the expedition committee turned down a very qualified Australian. It was very poignant when Mallory realized that his age was a handicap, and he damned the Germans for taking away some of his best climbing years. He wrote that after the war he'd spend the rest of his days at home. But no, he'd even go with the devil to reach the summit! We learn that his motivation was the natural beauty and awe of the mountain. This book was a startling comparison to current Everest reading such as High crimes: the fate of Everest in an age of greed.

Ivan Aucanshala arqivanaucedae — This is a very engaging read about the Farallone Islands just off the coast of San Francisco which contains one of the largest populations of Great White sharks in the world. Not only is the shark stuff terrifying and incredibly interesting, so is the account of the author's adventure on the islands with the rouge research crew and all of the gazillion birds that live amongst the craggly rocks. Fantastic book.
