The best translation out there of the first modern tragedian. Includes all Buchner's works, one of which is a heartbreaking translation of the short story/essay "Lenz," the reading of which is key to understanding Buchner's aesthetic. Mueller captures the frantic, desperate poetry of "Woyzeck" unlike any other translation I've read. Top notch.

This looks creepy as fuck. Scientologists are everywhere here in Hollywood. Aliens, Tom Cruise, brainwashing, stalking; it's all good clean fun....

I kept waiting for it to really "get me" or make me respect and identify with McCandless. Instead, and I guess maybe this is part of the point, I was astounded by the unrealistic -- and absolutely foolish at times -- ways of this troubled, but possibly sweet-hearted young man. Overall, not enough of a worthy story for me.

It took me a long time to get into this book, but I really began to enjoy it about halfway through. It was a really touching book, and was much more fun than the last Marian Keyes book I read.

2 1/2 for this one. It reminds me a little of Harvey where the alcoholic sees a large rabbit. Here, a retiring Winston Churchill and a widowed librarian see a six foot black dog named Mr. Chartwell or Black Pat. The metaphor of the black dog of depression was a little too obvious and the conversations with the "dog", a bit weird for my taste.

My rating is more about the format of the book. This is the first time I listen to a book instead of reading it and it is quite a challenge! I agree with some of the things I heard and disagree with some points, especially those concerning religion and how it is not to be used as a guide in one's life. I understand we all need to find a way but religion must be there to govern or we'd all go wild ;p I didn't understand some parts and I wondered off in many ;p therefore I'm going to listen to it again and change my rating if needed so.

Ahhh soothing bald-headed words of philosophic calm in these awful Big Society days! Actually mockery of de Botton's pate aside, it turns out to be an apposite time to re-read this book, what with all the political uncertainty and knee-jerk cost-cutting going on in dear old Blighty, let alone the sudden squall of natural tragedy and regime change. It's like a philosophic little book of calm!

I was really looking for a "fluff" book after reading Hemingway for six months, and this book fit the bill. It was entertaining, predictable, and easy to read. Since that was essentially what I was looking for I really have no cause to complain. However, I will say there was an incorrect cultural reference towards the beginning of the book that left me a little irked...

** spoiler alert ** In my opinion, while “Girls in Pants” is the weakest out of the four, I don’t think it’s a bad book. It feels more like a filler to set up for the grand finale. There’s a strong sense of how hard long-term separation is going to be on the girls, and a lot of the story revolves around home and family. I wasn’t fond of having Carmen tout Valia around for a whole summer, on top of her dealing with her mother’s pregnancy, but it strengthened her character beyond “teenager with family issues.” The biggest misstep, though, was re-establishing Bridget’s relationship with Eric. Her breakdown and fallout at the end of the first book really hooked me, so having everything be okay now that Bridget’s of legal age bugged me. (If they had come to terms with what happened and left it at that, I would be fine with him showing up again.) Again, not a horrible book, but feels more like a place-holder.
