I don't know if I could ever read this again without thinking about Tom Hanks and his horrible hair...

Mary Roach has almost redeemed herself in my eyes. Following the success and enjoyable reading of Stiff, she tried too hard using humour with Spook and Bonk, thus reducing her credibility. Packing for Mars has her wit and famously long footnotes, but also some great facts about space travel. It was an easy read and a learning experience. Probably good for a bored teen to read, especially the chapters on "The three dolphin club: mating without gravity" and "Eating your pants: is Mars worth it?"

I was actually a little disappointed in the book, I was expecting a little bit more from it. I had heard that so many people loved this book, so I was just let down a little. One thing I didn't like about the book was that it was predictable. I like my endings to be a little bit more of a surprise. However, it was a good easy read. It was nice to read a book that a lot of women can relate to on some level. And I loved Guy and Hollis in the book they were by far my favorite characters. I loved their banter it was great!!!

Sure, Mom seems nice and sweet but she is definitely trying to ruin her daughter’s life! She has five ways that her mother ruins her life: she kisses her in front of her friends, she brings changes of clothes into school in the middle of the day, she talks too loudly, she restricts certain foods, and she worries too much that her daughter might get hurt. Tragic, isn’t it? But the little girl has a plan that results in her mother going to jail for trying to ruin her daughter’s life. She would try to call her husband, but the little girl also knows that her father is trying to ruin her life, so in her plan they both are put in jail. All seems perfect, until the girl realizes that that would leave her all alone and scared. So maybe it’s not the best plan after all. This sassy book has a sense of humor that keeps it from becoming bratty. The litany of wrong-doings of both the father and mother are humorous and even children will see right through them. Children will also enjoy spotting the holes in her plan before she realizes them herself. Her plan is painted with such broad humor that it could only be a daydream, a passing whim. Because all children feel this way about their parents at some time, they will relate effortlessly to the feelings on the page. Goode’s illustrations nicely use the white space on the page. They offer breezy lines done in watercolors that appear effortless and tie into the humor of the text well. A great ironic choice for Mother’s Day that will cut through books that can become a little too sweet when read all together, this book is appropriate for ages 5-7.

I actually have a story in here under a pen name. This was before I lost all confidence and got writer's block and fell into a pit of despair. Anyhow, I love anthologies, am just a sucker for them and this one does not disappoint. I know this, because I gave a couple copies to friends, and one kept her copy next to the tub. *Ahem.*

This was recommended to me by a reader friend when we started talking about our love of utopian novels. It was great. I stayed up until 2:30 AM reading and promptly finished the book in two days. It is a YA novel that is set in a version of the USA which is split into districts. The districts are led (and controlled) by the Capitol. To remind the citizens that the capital has all the power, each year a young girl and boy are selected by a lotto system to compete in the Hunger Games-a gladiator fight to the death in an arena. Like a reality television show, the games are broadcast to the districts. It sounds like a weird scenerio but trust me, it's worth the read. It's the first in a triology and my friend lent me number 2 and 3 at dinner last night. She said they are not as good but I'm dying to curl up this weekend and dive into them! Read this if: you like dystopian novels you like reading YA books (teen romance is a plot point although not in a typical way)
