Sometimes I stumble on an unexpected, but intuitive continuum in my reading, that leads me from one related book to another, which all have an intrinsic connection, shedding new light on some fascinating puzzles about both literary and politically relevant figures. Such is the situation with the list of books I've currently been reading listed below. I started out with the Roberto Bolano books and moved on to Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" and the "Fidel Castro: My Life" -A Spoken Autobiography. I highly recommend the reading trip. It was a revelation. Both Castro and Bolano are immensely informative and eye-opening sources to learn from and try to understand the events in Latin America for the past 50 years. Their mind-sets are totally different, almost opposite, one political and the other literary, which makes for an almost complete picture of the ideological forces on the surface to the realisms of the underbelly in Revolutionary struggles. Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism," effectively puts the nail in the coffin of what may be the necessary end of unregulated global capitalism, based on greed and tortuous disregard for the people. ** spoiler alert ** Brutal. Brutal el ayudante del Sheriff, el protagonista, que mata tranquilamente como si fuera a comprar el pan, y a gente que le cae bien, amigos, novias, etc. Y brutal que el tío te caiga bien, que te identifiques con él, que no desees que le pillen. Está claro que éso es mérito del autor, que se limita a meterte en la piel de un frío y calculador asesino pederasta, sin juzgarle o sin juzgar lo que es el bien y lo que es el mal. Todo ello en la asfixiante atmósfera de un pueblo perdido de los EE.UU. Magnífico retrato de un sitio "donde todo el mundo se conoce, y donde está mal visto hablar de lo que hace cada uno". Desde luego la historia te pilla por el cuello y no te suelta hasta la última página, donde te espera una sorpresa morrocotuda. Que visto desde la perspectiva del que lo sabe, era lógica y tal vez previsible, pero que a mi, particularmente, me pilló con el pie cambiado. Novela negra, negrísima, a la altura de "1280 almas". Casi diría que novela gemela a ésa.

Helen Keller is truly amazing. She found so much joy in life from friendships, nature, literature, and by choosing not to dwell on her limitations (and they are more severe than I can imagine). This book provides a three-dimensional view of her life up to her early twenties: her own autobiography--and she is a gifted writer; her letters--incredible to see how quickly she picked up language; and her teacher, Miss Sullivan's account--so insightful. Seth was getting updates every day on Helen Keller while I read it, I was so fascinated that I had to share.

This book is possibly one of Jodi's best. In light of the recent shootings at Virginia Tech, it's the story of what happens after the souls are lost, the bodies are buried, and the media outlets have found the next story. A beautiful picture of how a person, family, and community on both sides of the active parties can build, shatter, and begin to put the pieces back together. If you're only going to read one of Picoult's book, make sure it's this one.
