Not bad for a spin-off especially for non-Sydney fans.

Astonishingly packaged and put together, this story of the late life of pioneer filmmaker Georges Melies is told through text and pictures. But while everyone else has raved about it, I found the writing itself a bit flat and lacking in interesting plot complication. The Washington Post summed up my take beautifully in their review, part of which reads: "The problem is that Selznick...is really not much of a writer....[M]ost of the time, the prose has a one-foot-in-front-of the-other quality that's about as interesting as watching a clock hand move..." Well said. More, after a later rereading: What's amazing in this book is the virtuoso visual storytelling, which is truer in its way to the vision of Georges Melies than the story itself. It delivers on the first lesson of filmmaking, which is that the right images can tell the story better than words. In this book, pictures truly are worth thousands of words. For the pictures, I'd give this five stars. For the text, three. So I've revised my review up to four.

This trilogy was truly amazing. It was brutal, I actually choked up a couple of times reading this book and even after finished, I can't help but keep thinking about it. It was really good.

Margaret Atwood rules. The Edible Woman is so deeply engaging, I was sorry to have finished it. I really enjoyed the kitchen sink surrealist (to coin a phrase) quality to this book. It kind of reminded me of Angela Carter's "Love." They share the same humorously grim view of the slightly unraveled gentility of 1960's post-collegiates trying to hold it together in their capacities as grown-ups. This is only the second of Atwood's books I have read (the first was the amazing Alias Grace). Any recommendations for which one I should read next?

I don't know how the Library of Congress picks the Poet Laureate of the United States. I am fairly sure it involves secret meetings and long conversations. However, they do it, I am grateful that they just picked Philip Levine. I might not have read any poetry by him without having heard the announcement about his appointment. This book is amazing. I just don't have the words to do Levine justice. His words are all you need. Go to the library, check out this book and read. Don't speed through it - there are less than 90 pages. Read each poem. Think about it, maybe read it out loud. Then go away and come back for another. Levine writes stories in his poetry and like all good stories they need to be chewed and digested. This poetry requires thought. If you know me, you can pick out a couple of poems that I might love. Yes, I did like "Library Days" and the poems set in Spain. But others, ones that I had to warm up to, still stick in my brain. "Closed", "Homecoming" and "Magic" are also wonderful. You could sit down and read this book in an afternoon. Or you could say I don't read poetry and never even pick it up. Do yourself a favor. Take the time to savor this book. You won't be sorry.

One of the things I mentioned in the All-American Girl reviews is that Mia is a very immature character compared to other Meg Cabot heroines, and it shows in this book. It also doesn’t help that the major subplot is lifted from Ready or Not, although Mia’s approach to the sex question is vastly different from Sam’s. The one thing I did like about this is that you see Mia’s confidence growing, with the main plot of her being thrust into the student council president race. She actually does speak up on issues, without Lilly or other friends pushing her to do so. It’s a direction I really hoped would show up in later volumes (which I’ll get to when I get to them). The subplot with Michael and the question of whether or not that they should “do it,” on the other hand, really illustrates her immaturity. Mia continuously freaks out at any mention of committing the “act,” but without sitting down and talking it through with her boyfriend. I am also not a fan of the subplot with Ms. Martinez—while I can sort of see and understand Mia’s reaction of “OMG HOW DARE SHE NOT THINK MY WRITING IS BRILLIANT!!”, I’m not a fan of the obvious offense of “Pop culture references aren’t high literature.” (Which becomes more egregious once you learn that it was meant to be a take that at some of Meg Cabot’s critics.) There’s a lot of wasted potential in the book, particularly in making Mia grow as a character, and it really shows in the writing.

"when you really want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you achieve it" - maybe its an oversimplification to say that everything can happen if you want it badly enough, but this book is incredible for its optimism. one part that really got me was the crystal shopowner. he symbolizes the idea that fear of failure is the greatest obstacle to happiness. As he confessed, "I am afraid that great disappointment awaits me, and so I prefer to dream". Basically, people sacrifice fulfillment to conformity, they are afraid of the struggle and the possibility of failure; they know they can achieve greatness but deny themselves the chance to do so, and end up living a life of void. great book!

Better than your average travel memoir. Steinbach manages to make Paris, London, and Italy seem exotic by relating the sights to the inner journey she is taking. Very well written, and now I'm dying to spend a month in Paris and about 2 years in Italy exploring all the little towns!
