Books like this are a teaser back into a universe readers love. It is hardly enough to provide anything, but pulls you back into the world just enough to make you want to re-read the original books. I think these are written when the author would like to go on vacation and doesn't have enough money saved. Just for a quick buck or two. I felt the same way after reading Beedle the Bard, the newest J.K. Rowling book. Just a nothing book that didn't add anything but made me want to re-read the original series. Oh, well.

In a more traditionally structured novel, Douglas Coupland paints a picture of the quiet nerd desperation in the pre-dotcom days in Silicon Valley. It follows a group of friends as they quit their drone jobs at Microsoft to create their own program, market it, succeed, and still try to deal with their changing lifetstyles. It definitely plays to Coupland's strengths of realistic detail and capturing the personality and idosynchroses of his characters. He cares for all of them and really humanizes them to the reader. Even if you aren't the most technologically minded person in the world, you can still relate to the protagonists. However, if you are a bit of a geek, you will certainly appreciate the little details Coupland puts into his work.

Great book! The early chapters are a wonderful introduction to/refresher in basic music theory and the rest of the book discusses how the brain listens to, enjoys and plays music. There is a good discussion of why we humans play and enjoy music from the evolutionary perspective. I particularly like Levitin's range of musical illustrations, he chooses pieces from popular, jazz and classical music that are familiar enough that you needn't go to the internet or your collection to hear them, all of them excellent choices to illustrate his points! I plan to purchase this and give it to friends.

Finally, a free NookBook that didn't completely suck... er, no pun intended. Three chapters in I said to my husband, "Hey, this book is actually really good!" Shanna is put into a witness protection program after watching her roommate get killed in a restaurant shooting. Now, years later, she has been discovered by the enemy and is being target. Thankfully Roman, the friendly, wealthy, do-gooder vampire, is in the right place at the right time to save her and help her solve this mystery. For me, the first half definitely flowed more smoothly than the second half, but throughout the whole thing I was laughing and clicking/swiping to the next page as fast as I could. There was even a plot twist at the end involving Shanna's father! I did notice a few similarities to Twilight, but that could also just be common traits of all vampires (ie: lifting heavy objects, the Vamp whining that he's a killer with no soul, etc.) If you're looking for a an easy and entertaining read, try this one, though I am sad to say it is no longer free for the Nook.
