I recommend White Teeth to everyone who ever asks me about my intercultural experiences and my overt antagonism towards people who belittle me by calling me "a foreigner". So I was excited to read The Autograph Man, hoping that it would give me an insight into another section of the world, one that I had less contact and experience with. And in many ways, I suppose it did. But I can't say that I came out of the read with better understanding other than perhaps distress at how incomprehensible people on drugs tend to be. But maybe that was a goal. Maybe the Kabbalah references were simply coincidental to the story. Too bad that's what I got stuck on, impeding my ability to really follow much else of the storyline. The writing is gorgeous though. "Women are the answer. They are. If you'll only let them into the story. Women. They are the answer." "What's the question?" "England is always autumnal from the air" Maybe I'll give this book another go when I'm a little more relaxed and able to look past the piles of information on each page that I simply don't understand.

Pretty good book and I'm not a huge fan of LDS literature but I really liked it I'm reading the next one Tribunal right now.

This is a pretty interesting book. Although the financial fraud details went over my head at points, I still got the main idea, which I appreciated. Even though this is a translation, I found few grammatical errors or areas of confusion. I loved both the financial fraud and murder mystery plot; however, I didn't like that it felt as if the murder mystery portion and the financial fraud were two entirely different and unconnected stories. I think there could have been a bit more connecting the two plots and how they connect the main characters, Lisbeth and Blomkvist. As a side-note, I found it interesting how much the United States and English are mentioned in the novel. It was a neat window into how the world views people from the United States.

My mom read this aloud to my brother and I as children. I remember her voice reading: Fiver, Bigwig, and she couldn't pronounce the long name of the king rabbit (or was he a god?), so she just called him 'El.' Our favorite line: [in a rabbit legend about why rabbits run so fast, Frith honors the rabbit, saying] "Bottom, be blessed. Run fast and protect your master."
Deeply frustrating. So much mayhem and murder. So many nefarious plots, minor characters with gutteral names, train rides, and close calls. So little character development and plot. And no resolution. I wanted to enjoy it. I enjoyed Glass Books for the most part. But nothing really happens that hasn't happened before 500 pages before. And the characters are not rich enough to keep the story going.
I hope these books are as good as Love Mode (graphic series).

I have a first edition first printing of this that I bought before the charges came out. Wonder if it's worth anything?!

I keep reading this man's books to underscore my conviction about how formulaic his writing is. On the last page of each of the three books I have read, the two main characters finally have sex with some quippy line leading into it. This book's titillating exchange: What can you tell me about the mating rituals of advanced primates? I'm afraid I don't really do primates. Well, nature boy, I suggest you learn fast.

I really enjoyed this book. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. I can hardly wait for the sequel!!
