It is a good book, well written, but I think something was missing, but I still do not know what... confusing am I? yeah... The thing I did like is that even though he was in prison, he did something to be a better person.

Wow. I've been wanting to read this book since I first heard about it as I am a huge fan of poet Anne Sexton. Although I'm a huge fan and I believe I've read every single poem she's ever published, I didn't know a whole lot about her life beyond her mental health issues and her suicide in the 1970s. I found this memoir, by Anne's daughter, to be a very compelling and interesting read. It was difficult to read at times given the chaos and instability of Anne's life and its impact on her family. Although I admire Sexton's poetry, I am very thankful that I am not her child. Or her family member. Or her friend, for that matter. She cannot have been an easy person to care for at any point and time. Personally, I found Linda Gray Sexton's memoir to be very disturbing but fairly balanced look at her mother's life and the impact that her mother had on the people around her. In fact, I felt as if her mother came to life as I read the book. In good ways and in bad. Given Anne's poetry, I was not surprised by much of the book. However, there were a few things that really gave me pause. Anne Sexton was obviously a very gifted poet but she was also a very disturbed woman who was destructive to those around her (and herself) in almost every way possible during her life. She's a fascinating woman to me for a number of reasons and I thought it was very interesting to see Anne Sexton from her daughter's perspective. I don't know how enjoyable the book would be for someone who was not a fan of Sexton's poetry but I found it to be very compelling and interesting. I thought that Linda Gray Sexton was extremely brave to put pen to paper and talk so honestly about her mother and her own life. But, I will warn you, there is a great deal of raw content that may not be suitable for all readers - if physical, emotional and sexual abuse is too much for you to read about, you may want to pass on this one. In the end, I found the book to be both compelling and unsettling. And, I feel like it really gave me a clearer understanding of Anne Sexton and the beautiful poetry she left us. Personally, I find her poetry to be some of the best of American Poetry but I am very unsettled by what she put her family (particularly her daughters) through as she struggled with her own demons. Very sad, poignant book.

I haven't read this in years, but I remember how right it felt reading it. Quick read, much more serious than many of her time travel books.

Stranger isn't Heinlein's best, but it's better than most of the books you're likely to read in your lifetime. It chronicles the life and struggles of Valentine Michael Smith, the only human born on another world - Mars in this case. As is pointed out early, Michael isn't really human. Genetically, of course, he's a man, but he was raised on Mars by Martians after being orphaned. His whole idealogy and personality centers around this. A young adult Michael is "rescued" and returned to Earth, where he is befriended by a lecherous old millionare, Jubal Harshaw, and begins to learn about being a man. His startling naïveté is endearing, but Micheal is no fool. He has a variety of abilities apparently common to Martians in general, from the ability to precisely control his body functions such as heart rate and breathing, to what appear to be psychic powers. He can even "turn" an object 90 degrees to everything, removing it from this universe entirely. He's baffled by Humanity, confused by concepts we take for granted, including religion and sex. I won't spoil the plot entirely (since you do plan on reading it, right?), but Michael does eventually adapt to human customs, and even starts his own church. The latter half of the book is a both spiritual and poignant exploration of what it is to be an outsider as well as a human. Grok it in fullness; should you read with an open heart, you will be changed. A lot of people will like this book because of the openly sexual nature of much of the story. In truth, all of that is nearly irrelevant. That's just how Heinlein is. If you read and enjoyed The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, you'll be at home here, and enjoy the book despite the gratuitous use of sex to get attention. As a final word...just read it. You'll thank me later. This isn't quite the grandmaster at his best, but it's not far from it.

The best fantasy I've read in a long while. This is the book I always wanted to write. Plenty of adventure, secrets and a fast pace story. The sequel didn't capture me quite as well but still looking to be a great triology from a first time author.

Made my stomach jump...strange to find myself wishing I'd "known" a fictional character. I wish I'd known Owen Meany.

I read this book when I was younger, possibly early teens or even pre-teen, can't remember. BUT I re-read it about two years ago because it was that good.

Really weird photos staged and created as if for theater or film.

I'm about halfway through this book and I love it as much as the first one. These books are the most realistic and accessible of any fantasy I've read. They're beautifully written and packed with enough emotion to make me want to throw the book across the room sometimes or excitedly tell someone else what was happening. I was too excited to not start writing a review, and I'll finish this review properly when I'm finished reading. I wish the story would never end.

Collections of short stories tend to be filed under "not my thing." However, I found the situation for Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies to be quite the contrary. While I'm not sure enjoyable is truly a fitting word for this collection of pieces, due to the fact that several of the stories contain content that is downright depressing. However, I can confidently say that it was worth reading, and then some. While several of the pieces where rather saddening, there was a pleasant mixture in between them, with the occasional uplifting tale. Very easy to be read on a casual level as long sit downs are not required to stay in tune with the story, or lack there of.
