I absolutely love Brockmeier's collection of short stories, "Things that Fall from the Sky," and this novel is a good read too. I did find myself disappointed that the book wasn't really about anything more than some vague themes, and the ending feels limp given the slow, moody buildup. Still, even the bland ending is wrapped up in Brockmeier's imagery, and I can forgive a book (just as I can a big budget Hollywood movie) for being shallow as long as it entertains me with pretty pictures.

Two teens fall in love and end up killing each other. I thought the book was well written but the character actions a little moronic. The book was entertaining and only that, entertaining. My favorite part was when Mercutio first entered, he was the comic relief. I had to read this book for school, if I didn't then I would get a 0.

I gave the book three stars only because it was such a drag to read through when, after the first chapter I already agreed with the thesis of choice not being all that great of a feature of American life. Keeping up with the immense technology developments, choices of food stuff to buy, places to eat- too many bloody choices. However, theres nothing wrong with choices, I prefer this to having an empty grocery shelf or being told I cant go vacation someplace. I think its harsh of me to give 3 stars just because of my impatience with the author, but there it is, he could have chose to include less in pushing his thesis. Regardless, the last chapter on addressing our world of endless choices and the bottomless pit of emotional pain it creates for us is the jewel of the endeavor taken to write on the subject! Though outdated (by six years or so?) it is still very much applicable to our situation since choice has only increased in more aspects of life.
