Fascinating subject (the OED) but not particularly well-written.

boy, he has just lavished thought and exploration on the american diet from seemingly every possible angle, it's at least a dissertation worth of investigation, but engaging and well-written.

What a lousy waste of time. Poorly written, weak characters, and a plot I couldn't have made up if I tried - if I hadn't been in Israel for the year and desperate for anything in English I wouldn't have stuck through. Blech.

Coming from a juvenile fiction background, I would describe this as an adult "Julie of the Wolves". Beautifully written, Ms. Campbell creates a character so desperate to be loved, that she places herself at the mercy of others - but she is very capable of taking care of herself. At times it is emotionally draining to read - and although the ending is not "happy happy", there is a sense of hope.

Hmmm this book is slow to start and thus I am finding it difficult to continue reading. This book was not hugely engaging, however, I pushed on and discovered it ended exactly the way I intended it to. Overall not an amazing book, I found she (Cathy) skipped over important sides stories of the book and also the at the beginning of the paragraph where she included an exit from the novel Hope was writing was poorly written and not interesting. Thus I must change the rating from 2 stars to 1.

gosh is a great story teller, and he provides a unique perspective on the implications of the "Raj" by telling its story through Burma. It starts from the British invasion of Myanmar and goes through the 1990s, focusing mostly on pre-WWII and WWII. Gosh provides one of the better accounts of WWII's impact on families and communities on the Asian Front.
