I didn't really like New moon but it was still in high in my list of books

War! Battle scenes make my eyes cross after a short time, which is why Martin's approach to the story and his style of writing is ever appreciated. While they tend to say "show, don't tell" I certainly feel it's more effective here to have many points and revelations gleaned through secondhand messages. What we see is the character reaction, which is all the more impressive. I picked up on all sorts of clues and details in this book, which I'm proud of, yet it also kind of kills a bit of the fun because it ruins certain surprises and twists. There were still surprises despite that and even the moments with said clues elicited the proper response, just earlier than was most effective. I do find it interesting that so much of what's to come is spelled out for you... you just have to look for it. Also, Martin loves his cliffhangers! I think every main character was left on a cliffhanger of a sort, even if it's simply the act of pointing them down a new and unknown road. Definitely eager to get my hands on book 3.

A nice basic review of statistics. I read through this with my stats text from college, looking up derivations/proofs of the important results discussed more intuitively in this book. I think this was a valuable approach, I certainly got more mileage out of this book with this kind of reading.

The mystery's premise was pretty well done, but I was really disappointed in the use of foul language in the book. It had more f-words than would be allowed in a PG-13 movie, and that contrasted sharply with the demure main character (maybe by surrounding the plain main character with more mouthy friends, the author thought she'd make the main character less boring?) and the overall light touch of the plot (which would have strayed into heavier matters, but never touched them). It's one thing to open up a Stephen King novel and get that sort of language, but this was like...picking up a Debbie Macomber novel and finding f-words. Really strange. The other thing that disappointed me in this book was that there were no graphics of the handwriting the main character (a forensic handwriting analyst) was looking at! When your book is based on such a visual premise, it feels like a letdown to not see what the character sees, and to imagine all the different jargony things she talks about. I wouldn't get another fictional book by this author...but I might check out her nonfiction on actual handwriting analysing.
I read this for a social work class. It's about a child who falls through a lot of cracks, and dies because of the efforts of social services to keep his family together. Social workers used to have a reputation of being "baby snatchers", and the author's argument is that we've gone too far in the other direction, preserving families even when it's a bad idea. A problem I have with the book is that it takes place in Florida, and their social systems are about as bad as it gets; I think (or hope!) it's not representative of the rest of the country.

This highly diverting memoir is the follow-up to THE MOON'S A BALLOON. I have not read THE MOON'S A BALLOON, but if BRING ON THE EMPTY HORSES is merely a pale imitation than THE MOON'S A BALLOON must be hilarious. Niven actually makes Hollywood sound like a beautiful place. In his Hollywood people offer each other cool glasses of iced-tea, smiles and good fellowship. But he does not shy away from reality. There is a chapter describing an actress's nervous breakdown in frightening detail. The reader is aware that the people who are nice to Niven are not necessarily good people. A Niven biographer has said that he fabricated a lot of stories. But there is a sustained mood of wistfulness here which can't have come from a desire to distort. Niven had a desire to tell us about a wonderful place he himself never quite reached.

It's another book based on the awesomefo Winx Club series. I still like the show better. This one covers some of the last few filler episodes and the fourth-to-last episode. Read it. Fun.

I like this book. I know she was skanky for running around on her husband and four kids but I enjoyed reading about her exploits. These people always have great houses and cute kids and live in a world beyond our reach. I liked the story from the various points of view. I didn't see enough of her husband though and he seemed like an interesting character. He wasn't bad just not giving her what she wanted after fifteen years of marriage. It happens but she let herself be swept away in emotion. Alls well that ends well. It seems like everyone loved her (lovers, husband, old boyfriends, friends, neighbors, kids). Ah to be so lucky....

Loved this book! This book is a great choice for kids who have struggled with school-work. The ending of this story shows that with hard work and dedication (and the help of a good teacher) many things are possible. It is also a great book for teachers because we all want to be that teacher who helps a student succeed.
