I have not read THE MOON'S A BALLOON, but if BRING ON THE EMPTY HORSES is merely a pale imitation than THE MOON'S A BALLOON must be hilarious. Niven actually makes Hollywood sound like a beautiful place. In his Hollywood people offer each other cool glasses of iced-tea, smiles and good fellowship. But he does not shy away from reality. There is a chapter describing an actress's nervous breakdown in frightening detail. The reader is aware that the people who are nice to Niven are not necessarily good people. A Niven biographer has said that he fabricated a lot of stories. But there is a sustained mood of wistfulness here which can't have come from a desire to distort. Niven had a desire to tell us about a wonderful place he himself never quite reached.

Nikhar Jain nikharnowlfe64 — This heartwrending tale personalizes the plight of so many Lithuanians who were taken from their homes for the Russians, brutalized, and then sent into labor camps (community farms)to toil under horrid conditions. Though filled with scenes of unspeakable horror, the novel also recounts the quickly formed kinships of those who had so recently been strangers. The stark differences between the egotism of some in power and the kindness of others is evident as the group of "criminals" are moved from Lithuania to Siberia.

But it's also really sweet, it's kind of like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm or Anne of Green Gables or something, but it's all about how to be self-sufficient and be educated at your own level and have self-confidence and stuff. Plus applesauce.

Tanyia Conley 1nyiababy181ab — This is a great thrill ride with really imaginative use of technology. The fact that Suarez is an expert programmer himself gives validity to the ideas and technology behind them. It does become a little too far fetched as it goes along, which does the worst thing a story can do: pull you out of the story's trance. However, it still is a fun and engaging technological thriller.
