The third and final book in a trilogy yet I was able to read it as stand alone. It was good. I liked how Troth found a place to be as a healer in a convent. Crispin's adventures after that sometimes gave me a stomach ache so you know that is good writing! I like how Crispin befriends Owen and in some ways they "head out into the sunset." The portrayal of medieval times was very realistic.

At first blush, one would think Snoop Dogg is an unlikely, even inappropriate, choice as a role model. I mean here is a man whose music celebrates a whole host of unhelpful choices. Even so, after reading Ms. Carlson-Berne's book, I can say there are certainly many commendable qualities to the man. Perhaps the biggest lesson a middle-aged white man can draw from this book is to constantly be on guard for being judgemental and prejudiced. Such qualities are never helpful and run counter to many of Christ's teachings. In fact Snoop's faith is cited as a key success factor in his early life. I recommend this book to anyone curious about gangsta rap.

I skipped the middle of this book and went to the end after reading the first 150 pages just to see if it redeemed itself. It didn't. The father was still an asshole and never learned the error of his ways. The plot formula is old and tired. If you need something predictable and brainless, go with this. An extreme let down after Firefly Lane. The only character I cared about ended up gone for a very long time and the rest were just pathetic.

Yum #3! These are such addicting books!
** spoiler alert ** It was a good book.... but. This book continues on pretty much from where the first one finished up. But it just didn't make as much impact on me as the original. Like the first book, you get a lot of action and parallel storylines for your money. And in that regard, Larsson is to be commended. A lesser author might have split these stories across more books - but Stieg doesn't hold back. I felt the first book was like having two thrillers rolled in to one. This one however was just lacking something which didn't make for as compelling a story. Yes, we have a triple murder that everyone suggests Salander is responsible for. But a good portion of the book is from everyone else's perspective investigating the murders. The reader is pretty sure that Salander didn't commit the crimes so this portion of the book seems a bit of a waste as we ultimately know they're going to find out she didn't do it and start investigating the proper crime. I like the Salander character and this provided all the crucial background to her motivations and origins. I also like the scene in the caribbean where she kicked a guy into a hurricane. She's pretty bad ass. I like the Blomkvist too. He's a good character aswell. When he's not getting tail he's solving the mysteries, working the clues the hard way. The main problem i found with this book is that it's just too complicated. I found the story hard to follow. Even after having finished it a couple of days and having tried to explain it to people, i'm not entirely sure what specific set of events led to the murders. I also failed to appreciate that the giant hitman character is the same character as the drug dealer from the start. it's complicated. i found myself turning back and forth quite a lot to keep on top of the characters and the different relationships and histories. Overall, a good solid thriller that really does have an amazing climactic ending. Salander is a great character and the book is very well written. Worth a read if just because it builds on the characters from the first book.

A psychedelic prologue to what someone promises me will be a wortwhile series. Intriguing in its roots ("Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came"), but disjointed, and the characters walk around with heavy, unspecified pasts in a world that's vaguely post-apocalyptic.

This book put words to experiences I've had with my own relationship with my mother better than any I've read so far... The movie is actually freakin' awesome, too.

This is a colonialist novel written in the modern day, with post-colonialist concepts firmly in place. If that sounds a little confusing, it was. Godshalk writes in the voice of a 19th century explorer very convincingly. There are various gritty details that betray the modernity of the author. There is information about feminine hygiene and sexual relations that would not have been included in a true 1800’s novel. That is one of Godshalk’s goals, to allow the reader to delve deeper into a colonial trip than a primary source would allow. The beating heart of this novel has two chambers; the engulfing Caribbean atmosphere and the love that flourishes among the denizens of Kalimantaan, both European and native. Godshalk takes a compassionate but honest view of the romantic livers of her characters. The Victorian Europeans are in a land away from time, cut off from the repressive social strictures of their compatriots, but still feeling their sway. The native people have their own agendas, often hidden from the reader, but they are caught in the same cycles of love and death and the colonialists.
