Kate Porras kateporras — This book put words to experiences I've had with my own relationship with my mother better than any I've read so far... The movie is actually freakin' awesome, too.

Nelia Vieira neliavieirafdb2 — I am giving the intriguing premise of this book - and, more significantly, the relationship between Jamie and Claire - three stars, and the rest of the book one star. There are some GREAT sex scenes in this book, and the author does a surprising job of creating a really great connection between the two lead characters that builds steadily and believably beyond just physical attraction as the book goes on. I was swept up in their journey and invested in what happened to them, and that investment is the only thing that kept me reading. The rest of the book is a jumbled mess. Ms. Gabaldon freely admits in the author notes that this was a practice book for her, to see if she could even write one. Kudos to her for doing it, and getting it published to boot. My hat's off to her, truly. But the book READS like a practice book. I won't be reading the rest of the series, but if she ever decides to abandon historical/violent/action/war-ridden/time-travel fiction and write a straight-up romance novel, I'm on board.
