This was one of those books that I was drawn to primarily by the cover, but I also thought the synopsis sounded cool too. Then I started reading, wasn't impressed & didn't really get into until almost midway through it. But when I got into it, I REALLY got into it and couldn't put it down. Okay, that's a lie. I could. But I picked it up very quickly every chance I got :P I had kind of mixed feelings about this one because some of the characters were very underdeveloped and two dimensional. It was so bad that I couldn't even keep track of their names. There'd be a paragraph with all these names in it and I'd have to read it very slow and be like Okay, that one is married to that one, that one is their daughter and so on and so forth. I really had to pay attention at some points because otherwise I would have just skimmed right over what I guess was meant to be important plot points. But then there were a few characters, (mainly Eve and Clare) that I was really invested in their stories and I knew who was connected to whom and things like that. Their stories were the meatiest, I think the rest was just kind of filler. I mean, I suppose there had to be more characters than just Eve and Clare otherwise it wouldn't have been much of a club. But all in all, this was a light read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Perfect for beach reading or poolside or even when you want a break from serious stuff. (Granted, there were serious topics in this book, but it wasn't like a dark, depressing book or anything. It was definitely on the lighter side.)

I was quickly drawn into this story. What the author was able to achieve -- in terms of research, bonding with the family, and writing a fascinating account of Lacks' life -- is really remarkable. Raises very provoking questions of ethics, policy, and medical procedures.

I wanted to give this a 3 1/2 star rating- it was well written, but frankly, a bit long. Within each section, chapters with title names are narrated in present time by the main character, and numbered chapters are narrated by the author, and tells parts of the history of some characters and places. I feel there are so many aspects of the story to decifer, or put together and solve, that by the end when it all comes together, I forgot many of the details. Once you kind of start putting it all together, it really does turn into a great story, it just takes a while to get there. The main story is about a young adult who gets lost, and happends upon a town with a huge, mysterious castle, with a deep literary connection to her youth. She realizes, upon having a tour, that this was the place her mother was housed during the war, when families sent their kids to the country. She starts to unravel the mysteries of her mother's past, along with unfolding the secrets of the castle, and the 3 ancient sisters that still live there. Overall, a good book. Now that I know more of the story, I am sure I would be able to reread it, and enjoy it more.

I loved this book. Bryson's tales of his father's cheapness and fascination with long car trips to places that have very limited historical significance were eerily reminiscent of our family vacations when I was a kid. I about peed a few times when he absolutely nailed what it was like to visit places like the Henry Ford museum, Wall Drug, and Gatlinburg. While his cynicism is apparently too biting for some readers, all I would suggest is to lighten up - this book is flat out funny and very real.

A well-written thriller that would appeal to readers who enjoyed Larsson's Trilogy. This first in a series and is a page-turner. It's a fast read, good escape and another Scandanavian mystery thriller.

A little too violent for my tastes, but I was impressed with the original (to me) concept of this world. The narrator, Bronson Pinchot, did a great job and managed various characters with distinct voices throughout.
